Ryan Fox to track Tiger Woods as he returns to PGA Championship

  • Maybe James Adducci's wager on Tiger winning the Masters was his first sports bet

When Woods held his nerve to close out his Masters win it ended a once-unthinkable major drought for the best golfer of his generation that stretched back to the 2008 U.S. Open. At that time, few could have imagined Woods would have to wait nearly 10 years to taste major success again. Woods, seeking a second major title after his success at the 1997 Masters, shared the lead with Mike Weir heading into the final round and looked to have the tournament wrapped up at the turn, only to wobble down the stretch.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have been out on the course at Bethpage Black as they started practice for this week's PGA Championship. Arnold Palmer played his last PGA Championship at age 64. It has only added to the hype surrounding his next assault on the majors at Bethpage, starting on Thursday, with the Golf Channel website summing up the ludicrous sense of expectation with the headline: "If Tiger wins the US PGA, we're talking Grand Slam.' As Faldo is keen to stress, that remains a rather large "if".

A by-product of Woods's billboard standing once more is the relative anonymity afforded to the rest of the world's top players in the tournament lead-up.

The model has been spot-on early in the 2018-19 season. Brooks Koepka reached minus 16 in victory at Bellerive last August. Anyone who has followed the model is way up.

The two-time major champion is good at drawing a crowd on his own, whether it's for his "grip it and rip it" drives or his colorful clothing choices. That was Bobby Jones, and he did it prior to the modern Grand Slam.

Recently, however, it's been a struggle for Spieth.

With the golf world wondering if he has enough high-level golf in him to match Mr. Nicklaus' record of 18 majors, Mr. Woods left a clue as to his aspirations, calling his recent Masters experience "certainly one of the highest that I've accomplished so far in my life on the golf course".

Bruins beat Blue Jackets 3-0, advance to conference final
McKegg was pushed into Rask by Kempfer and the net was dislodged, but the puck crossed the goal line before any contact was made. Columbus hit the crossbar three times: Pierre-Luc Dubois in the first period, and Dean Kukan and Josh Anderson in the second.

"I'm not the person that I was 20 years ago physically and mentally, I have to set new goals and have new ambitions and things like that", said Westwood, who holds the unwanted record of most top-three finishes in a major (nine) without winning one. "Obviously, as a past champion, this tournament is extra special to me".

Another surprise: Bryson DeChambeau, a 25-1 long shot, makes a strong run at the PGA Championship 2019 title.

The 25-year-old is golf's mad scientist with his single-length clubs and one-plane swing.

It's gloomy now at Bethpage Black, but this major should have a lively end.

But big, brawny Bethpage, a 7,459-yard course in Farmingdale on Long Island, is arguably less suited for his 43-year-old game than the other major venues this year.

The PGA of America has said the weekend rounds were virtual sellouts before Woods' victory at Augusta, and in the Masters' immediate aftermath, the public response to wanting to be at Bethpage was "extraordinary", said PGA of America President Seth Waugh.
