The Elysee statement added that two of the hostages were French citizens, named as Patrick Picque and Laurent Lassimouillas.

The three will fly to a military airport outside the French capital on Saturday evening where they will be welcomed by President Emmanuel Macron. The fourth hostage, an American woman, was not identified, and was flown back to the United States without speaking to Macron, according to The Daily Mail.

President Emmanuel Macron "wants to congratulate the French armed forces for the liberation of the hostages, and includes everyone who worked alongside them", the statement from the presidency said.

The minister said investigations were underway to identify the kidnappers, noting that networks affiliated with al Qaeda and ISIS are known to operate in the area.

Although Benin has always been spared the unrest seen in Mali and Burkina Faso, French officials have warned that jihadist insurgents could extend their operations into the sparsely populated desert regions further south.

The Korean woman in her 40s was one of the four hostages freed from a militant group in the African nation after being held hostage for 28 days. A military ceremony for the commandos is planned.

"The greatest precautions must be taken in these regions to avoid these types of kidnappings, and avoid the sacrifices required by our soldiers", he said.

The last death was announced on April 2 when a military doctor was killed in Mali when his armoured vehicle hit an improvised explosive device during an operation near the border with Burkina Faso.

Tracking the kidnappers to a remote shelter, French troops moved in.

Macron thanked authorities in Burkina Faso and Benin for their co-operation and promised them support in fighting terrorism.
