Trump says North Korea's recent missile launches not a breach of trust

The remark came a day after the DPRK fired two unidentified projectiles, presumed to be short-range missiles, from its northwestern region.

The South Korean military saw the projectiles fired by the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) on Thursday as short-range missiles, Newsis news agency reported Friday citing a defense ministry official.

Saturday's launch of a short-range missile from another east coast area was the North's first test of a ballistic missile since it launched an intercontinental ballistic missile in November 2017. North Korea also ridiculed South Korea for criticizing those launches.

This is happening amid delays in the diplomatic process between North Korea and the United States and the efforts to reduce the North Korean nuclear capacity.

Introducing his private conversation with Kim during their Panmunjom summit in April a year ago, Moon said the North's leader expressed his commitment to denuclearization "very frankly".

"But I don't think North Korea's latest series of projectile launches are violations of inter-Korean military agreements, because they occurred outside of the zone" where the two Koreas agreed not to conduct any military maneuvers.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his USA counterpart Donald Trump communicated with one another and separately expressed reserved criticism toward the act. In an interview with the KBS television network, Moon also said Seoul will explore various options to help revive the talks, including providing food aid to the North and pushing for his fourth summit with Kim.

South Korea responded to Saturday's action by the North by calling for an end to acts that escalate military tension. North Korea has test-fired rockets over Japanese territory in the past.

The United States, however, has argued that the relaxation of the economic sanctions would require North Korea to scrap all its nuclear facilities and programs, and shows no sign of reaching a compromise with Pyongyang.

U.S. President Donald Trump talks to reporters during a meeting with Slovakia's Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini in the Oval Office at the White House in Washington, U.S., May 3, 2019.

As with many previous missile tests, Pyongyang nearly immediately released imagery allowing for a closer look at this new missile.

Before Donald Trump met with Kim Jong Un at a summit in Hanoi in February, the North Korean dictator reportedly asked the United States to send over "famous basketball players" as part of a "cultural exchange" between the two countries as they attempted to craft a denuclearization agreement, per an ABC News report.

The North's second launch in five days was seen as a brushback pitch toward Washington over deadlocked nuclear negotiations.

Experts say North Korea's latest launches suggest it may have acquired or cloned a short-range missile the Russian military has long earmarked for export. It added that it had detected that one of the projectiles was launched from Sino-ri and the other was launched from Kusong, both in the North Pyongan Province, in northwest North Korea.

The new KCNA statement did not say what kind of weapon was sacked.
