Pavelski leads Sharks past Avalanche 3-2 in Game 7

  • Colorado Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon left and San Jose Sharks' Tomas Hertl vie for position during the third period of Game 5 of an NHL hockey second-round playoff series Saturday

Suiting up for the first time in the second round after recovering from a head injury, Pavelski scored once, assisted on another and provided a jolt of energy and emotion as the Sharks advanced to the Western Conference final with a 3-2 victory in Wednesday's Game 7 at SAP Center.

While they couldn't take the ice with their Silicon Valley brethren, they did get the crowd fired up for the Sharks' walk out to take the ice.

What made matters worse was the Sharks turned around and scored a goal just minutes later to go up 3-1 in the second period and would ultimately win 3-2.

Alas, the play was challenged by the Sharks and overturned as Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog was offside while standing at the far side of the blue-line as he waited to get off the ice for a change.

Perhaps supporting the Sharks will give the 49ers a bit of extra motivation to find the postseason themselves in 2019.

"You know, you're nearly speechless", coach Peter DeBoer said.

"I haven't gotten hurt in a long time - a year-and-a-half - and it happens in Game 7 of the second round", MacKinnon said afterward. The Sharks took two of the three games between these teams in the regular season. I'll take the blame for that. You can have an injury like that and miss months, or have one and be back in a week. San Jose is third in the league averaging 6.2 assists per game, led by Brent Burns with 0.8.

Europa League: Iwobi could set record with Arsenal
The lively semi-final contest finished 1-1 after the sides had produced the same scoreline in Frankfurt a week ago. It was a dream to get to the final, that didn't happen.

There is definitely more pressure on San Jose to win, as they were the series favorite and among the teams expected to win the Stanley Cup back in October.

Although he was stopped, his top line struck with 6.8 seconds left in the frame when Mikko Rantanen redirected a Samuel Girard point shot past Jones. "In both Game 7s, I think we played with no fear". MacKinnon set up Colin Wilson's goal in the slot, and all of the players appeared to be onside. "'Get off the ice.' If I could have done something different on that play, I would have jumped the boards a lot quicker", he said (via He opened the scoring in the first period and led his team to victory.

"After reviewing all available replays and consulting with the Linesman, the Situation Room determined that Gabriel Landeskog did not legally tag up at the blue line prior to the puck entering the offensive zone".

Colorado pushed hard in the third, getting a goal in the first minute from Jost, but the Sharks managed to hold on from there for the win.

The victor of the last game of the conference semi-finals advances to the West Conference Finals.

Just like at forward the Blues do not have quite the star power that the Sharks do on the blue line, but you cannot argue with the results they get. That is what San Jose has to do, put the pressure on the Avalanche defense and create breakdowns and force Grubauer to be a star, on the road.
