May has promised to stand down if her Brexit deal passes but has given no indication that she would go early while the issue of leaving the European Union remains unresolved.

She has said that if talks with Labour fail, parliament will be asked to vote on series of options on how to break the impasse, but those options have not been decided yet.

She is now protected by guidelines that say she can not face another challenge from Tory MPs within 12 months of the previous no-confidence vote, which she won in December.

As talks between the government and Labour over a Brexit deal resume, there is growing Tory pressure for Mrs May to quit.

Britain will have to take part in European Parliament elections on May 23 as there is not enough time left to get an exit deal ratified by parliament before then, Prime Minister Theresa May's de facto deputy said on Tuesday.

Ahead of the talks, Mr Lidington confirmed that the government accepted that the European Parliament elections would have to take place.

Earlier, May told her cabinet last week's local elections, when the Conservatives lost hundreds of council seats, underlined the need to get on with Brexit.

Internally, Mrs May met with chairman of the 1922 Committee Sir Graham Brady who called on the Tory leader to set a firm resignation date.

However leaked details on a possible compromise have angered Labour's negotiators, and lawmakers from both sides have expressed their opposition to a cross-party deal.

Conservative Brexit supporters might flock to the newly launched Brexit Party of former UKIP leader Nigel Farage, a staunch opponent of Britain's European Union membership.

Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said Brexit had a big impact on last week's local election results, which saw huge losses for the Tories and a disappointing showing for Labour.

Both the main parties are paying the price for failing to deliver Brexit.

Reports emerged at the weekend that the Prime Minister was ready to offer a temporary customs arrangement with the European Union that would last until the next general election.

Dinah Glover, a Tory activist whose petition triggered the EGM, told the i newspaper: "The party at the moment is in absolute meltdown because they are terrified she is going to do a deal which will do damage to our country".
