But the president's decision to award the nation's highest civilian honor to Woods also raised scrutiny about whether the president should be boosting the profile of a business associate of The Trump Organization.

President Donald Trump will present Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Monday after the legendary golfer made a stunning comeback to win the Masters Tournament last month.

Woods, who won the Masters in 2005, 2002, 2001 and 1997, has had multiple surgeries and took several months off from golfing in early 2010 following allegations he had extramarital affairs.

At the ceremony in the White House Rose Garden on Monday, Trump called Woods a "global symbol of American excellence, devotion and drive", an extraordinary golfer, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Charlie Sifford are the other three.

Woods, wearing a blue suit (not the Masters green jacket) was joined at the ceremony by his mother, Kultida, his two children, Sam and Charlie, his girlfriend, Erica Herman, and his caddie, Joe LaCava. Since taking office, Trump has presented the award to numerous athletes, including Alan Page, Roger Staubach, and a posthumous award to Babe Ruth.

At a ceremony attended by several US lawmakers, Trump called Woods "a true legend".

The Trump Organization notes on its website that Nicklaus, who endorsed Trump for president, and Woods have both designed courses for the company.

UK Prime Minister Fires Defense Secretary over Huawei Leaks
Williamson responded in a letter to May, saying he was "sorry you felt recent leaks" originated from the defense ministry. Mr Williamson blamed a vendetta by Sir Mark, who is also the Cabinet Secretary, for his sacking, The Times reports .

Woods has a villa named after him at Trump's Miami resort, according to ESPN. But Rush Limbaugh, who recently played with the President, says it's all in good fun.

Trump has been known to cheat on the golf course, including, reportedly, during previous games with Woods.

Speaking directly to his loved ones, Woods added: "You guys have meant so much to me in my life". Since then, Trump has been eager to tout his business partnership with Woods. "I've known him pre-presidency and obviously during his presidency", Woods said last summer at the Northern Trust Open in New Jersey.

"He's the president of the United States. No matter who is in the office, you may like, dislike personality or the politics, but we all must respect the office", Woods said at the time, earning the ire of ESPN commentator Max Kellerman. We've had dinner together.

There is not necessarily a rhyme or reason to who receives this medal, but Trump and Woods have been at least friendly for a long time as well as business partners, as the New York Times pointed out.

"Tiger Woods showed great class in the way he answered the question about the Office of the Presidency and me".
