Measles cases in the United States have surpassed the highest number on record since the disease was declared eliminated nationwide in 2000.

Federal health officials attributed the record-setting number to a few large outbreaks, specifically in NY and Washington state.

Two doses of the measles vaccine are essential to protect children and the World Health Organization says 95% vaccine coverage is needed for "herd immunity" against measles.

"When measles is imported into a community with a highly vaccinated population, outbreaks either don't happen or are usually small", CDC officials said in the statement.

The United States tops the list of high-income countries with the most children not receiving the first dose of the vaccine between 2010 and 2017, at more than 2.5 million.

As of April 18, there here have been some 359 confirmed cases of measles in Brooklyn and Queens since October, mostly involving unvaccinated members of the ultra Orthodox Jewish Community, according to the New York City Department of Health.

A person from NY who was unknowingly contagious with the measles then visited Southeast Michigan, spreading the illness to at least 38 people there, according to Lynn Sutfin, public information officer for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will provide an official update on Monday.

Hamilton says one case has been identified in Florida so far and no reported measles cases in Leon or surrounding counties.

He added that next week, during National Infant Immunization Week, his department will carry out "a comprehensive campaign to reinforce the message that vaccines are safe and effective". "You take a different scenario in sub-Saharan Africa where they are seeing measles all the time - they know people who have died".

"The most recent cases are known to be linked to earlier reported cases of measles", Medical Officer of Health for Toi Te Ora Public Health Dr Phil Shoemack said.

Measles in most people causes fever, runny nose, cough and a rash all over the body. But global coverage for those who also received their second dose dips to 67 per cent.

In the United Kingdom in 2017, there were 259 measles cases in England, rising to 966 in 2018.

"However due to ongoing measles outbreaks in Europe, we will continue to see cases, particularly in unimmunised individuals".

The almost 700 cases in the United States this year is the highest since the disease was declared eliminated in 2000.

However, a "lack of access, poor health systems, complacency and in some cases fear or skepticism about vaccines" meant that 15% of children across the globe did not receive the first dose.

The CDC recommends the vaccine for every American over 1 year old.
