  • Samsung’s futuristic new foldable phone keeps breaking

Samsung said it has received "a few" reports of damage to the displays of samples of its upcoming foldable smartphone, raising the prospect of a less than smooth entry for the splashy $1,980 handset.

Samsung provided press with sample units of its Galaxy Fold smartphone this week and already multiple reviewers are reporting broken displays.

Samsung said removing the protective layer might result in damage, and that it would inform customers of the issue.

So when Samsung sent out review units of the Galaxy Fold to a bunch of outlets and reviewers a couple of days back, what everyone expected was reviews raving about the Galaxy Fold and the fact that we can fold displays now like it's no big deal. In fact, this reviewer believes the problem may be down to debris getting into the hinge mechanism.

The phone comes with this protective layer/film. Who knew a plastic screen protector was responsible for holding together a $2,000 piece of technology. "Do NOT remove it".

Facebook Might Make Messenger Chats Available in its App
Jane Manchun Wong , who's a code investigator, has found some hints that show that it might happen. However, she argues that it could be because the app is now in development.

The Galaxy Fold goes on sale on April 26 in the United States for $1,980 dollars (about £1,500), making it one of the most expensive phones on the planet. But most of the reviewers did that and the device started giving problems afterwards. The Galaxy Fold's main display has an upper protective layer, which is part of the display structure and is created to protect the display from unintentional scratches. A CNBC video shows the left side of the inside screen intermittently flashing and the right side as unresponsive. Having anything important that can be peeled off is a bad idea, because it will either be peeled off by idle fingers, or it will eventually peel off in day to day use.

Writing for the Verge, Dieter Bohn described a "bulge" in his device's screen that ultimately led the folding phone to fail. In one instance, a piece of foreign material worked its way under one review unit and eventual pierced the OLED panel, permanently damaging it.

"In-folding is more hard to make than out-folding, as it adds higher pressure to screens, which people have anxious about", said analyst Park Sung-soon at BNK Securities.

Samsung released a statement announcing its intent to investigate all affected sample units and to make clear to buyers that removing the protective layer would damage their handset.

The disturbing reviews come as the Fold, which was unveiled in February, gets ready to hit stores next week. But, as some have noted online, at least the phone's battery isn't exploding like those in the Note 7.
