  • Ablaze: Notre Dame Catherdal in Paris engulfed in fire

It is reported that there were extensive building works being carried out there, but there is no information yet as to what may have actually caused the fire.

She says everything was fine when she visited the site this morning. This scaffolding was put in place as part of a $6.8 million restoration project that was ongoing at the time.

The firefighters managed to successfully stop the fire from spreading to Notre Dame's two stone towers out in front, but were unable to save its spire.

President Emmanuel Macron said the whole nation was distressed. The spire was undergoing renovation.

As firefighters battled the blaze, part of the spire of the 12-century monument collapsed. He pledged to rebuild the church and said he would seek worldwide help to do so.

Scientists reveal first image of black hole
The project cost $50 million to $60 million, with $28 million of that coming from the National Science Foundation. Scientists have lifted the veil on the first images ever captured of a black hole's event horizon .

Flames and black smoke were seen shooting from the base of the medieval church's spire on Monday. Its bells rang out calling all Parisians to celebrate the end of the Second.

Quebec Premier François Legault tweeted his condolences, saying "Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is a gem!" Situated on the Ile de la Cite, an island in the Seine river, its architecture is famous for, among other things, its many gargoyles and its iconic flying buttresses. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo said late Monday that the collection of artwork and holy objects kept inside the church had been recovered, though it was not clear if any items were damaged. Its priceless treasures also include a Catholic relic, the crown of thorns, which is only occasionally displayed, including on Fridays during Lent.

Macron said a national fundraising campaign to restore Notre Dame would be launched Tuesday and he called on the world's "greatest talents" to help.

While experts said that the cathedral was not at risk of sudden collapse, many will now be fearing the worst, as parts have already collapsed. "We can be only horrified by what we see".

US President Donald Trump on Monday called the blaze engulfing Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris "horrible" and suggested the deployment of flying water tankers, before being told by French authorities that this wouldn't work.
