  • Sony finally allows PSN Online ID changes

Sony has announced that its long-requested PSN ID change feature is finally seeing a release on PlayStation 4 today.

The name change feature was supposed to function with all games published after April 1, 2018, with games published before then showing the original online ID.

Sony recommends not changing your PSN ID, if you would like to continue playing those 10 games.

You can change your PSN ID back to a previous ID by contacting PlayStation Support. Your first PSN name change is free; every subsequent change will cost you actual money ($9.99 U.S. per change for regular users, or $4.99 for PS Plus subscribers). The best part about the whole thing is that you can go back to your old name for free.

If you are considering changing your PSN Online ID, there are a few issues you may want to consider.

So proceed with caution, and if you're seriously anxious about these possibilities, perhaps skip out on changing your ID and just make a new account instead.

Back in October 2018, Sony announced a new feature that would allow players to change their PSN IDs. Sony says a small minority of games it has not tested may not support a user changing their online ID. Will you be changing your PSN ID? Tested titles have been helpfully divided into three categories: Games with No Known Issues, Games with Issues Identified, and Games with Critical Issues.

No, your old online ID is only available to you.

Q: Will all PS4 games released in the future support the feature?

PlayStation users have been begging for the name change feature. PS3 and PS Vita games are not supported.

The list only offers information on the severity of those issues, not the specific problems players may experience with each game if they opt to change their name so it may be up to the developers themselves to offer up that information to their players. I hope you found this guide helpful, and pick your new name carefully, as it can not breach Sony's terms of service! The fee for each change beyond the first one does sound a little steep, but it makes sense as a deterrent; preventing trolls from disguising themselves at no cost. But there are many other popular titles that will have issues.
