Measles outbreak prompts NYC emergency — Travellers Beware

A recently released large-scale Danish study looked at any possible risk for autism from the MMR vaccine and the conclusion was that "MMR vaccination does not increase the risk for autism, does not trigger autism in susceptible children, and is not associated with clustering of autism cases after vaccination".

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a public health emergency Tuesday and ordered vaccinations for some of the city's residents amid a measles outbreak concentrated in one neighborhood's Orthodox Jewish community.

Vaccination rates are lower among younger children, aged 19 to 35 months.

They will impose fines of up to $1,000 on those who have not received the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine and can not give other evidence of immunity, such as having previously had the measles. "Our goal is to vaccinate people". We have to take this seriously. Anyone who resists could be fined up to US$1000.

"If people ignore our order", he added, "We will issue fines".

The Health Department order also mandates that parents vaccinate children who are six months of age or older unless the parent or guardian can prove the child is immune to the disease or should be "medically exempt from this requirement".

To encourage immunization, the city has created the slogan, "Don't wait".

Officials say 285 measles cases have been confirmed in NY since the beginning of the outbreak, the largest in the city since 1991.

Dr. Oxiris Barbot, the health commissioner, said that New Yorkers need to know that the MMR vaccine is safe. Newborns, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems can not get vaccinated, so it is important that everyone around them be vaccinated in order to protect them from contracting the virus and prevent severe complications in these susceptible populations. All but 39 of the confirmed cases are in children. Twenty-one people have been hospitalized, with five ending up in the intensive care unit, but there have been no deaths.

De Blasio said the number of confirmed cases in Williamsburg has ballooned since Purim and that there are concerns that the disease will continue to spread as families come together to celebrate Passover. "We have to stop it now", he said. Measles is highly contagious from four days before to four days after symptoms appear.

"This is about protecting our communities and each other - we can not wait until someone dies for us to act".

Cases have also been confirmed in Auckland and Christchurch. In 2018, there were 56 instances and there have been more than 225 cases already this year.

"This can be turned around quickly", he said.

"We can not wait until someone dies for us to act".

He said Rockland officials are crafting a new order created to isolate people exposed to measles.

"This outbreak is being fuelled by a small group of anti-vaxxers in these neighbourhoods", Dr Barbot said. "They have been spreading unsafe misinformation based on fake science", Barbot said. "We live in a different world now".

Earlier this week, the city ordered religious schools and day care programs serving that community to exclude unvaccinated students or risk being closed down.

Since October, the city has barred all kids who don't have the vaccine from attending school, including the private yeshivas.
