AG William Barr: Redacted Mueller report to be released within a week

Attorney General William P. Barr testified Tuesday that he thinks he will be able to release special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's report "within a week".

Barr mentioned four reasons he will have to redact portions of Mueller's report before releasing it to the public.

Expressing frustration with the lack of information given to Congress, Lowey pointed to news reports suggesting the final report from Mueller's team is between 300 and 400 pages long. Barr has been working with top advisers and Mueller to prepare the almost 400-page report for public release.

Barr gave no indication of how much of the report will be obscured but said he was working with Mueller on restricting details about secret grand jury information, US intelligence gathering and ongoing criminal cases as well as potentially damaging information about peripheral players who were not charged in the Russian Federation probe.

Attorney General William Barr arrives to testify during a House Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies Subcommittee hearing on the Department of Justice Budget Request for Fiscal Year 2020, on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., April 9, 2019.

They, along with their colleagues, say the report should be released without redactions. Barr responded by asking the congressman: "Do you think it's likely that we are gong to prevail?"

Barr left open the possibility that some members of Congress would be allowed to review secret information from the report in a safe setting.

He will likely be asked to further explain himself at the hearing Tuesday and at a Senate appropriations subcommittee hearing Wednesday that is also on the budget. The Trump administration, which initially said Obamacare's insurance protections should be struck down as unconstitutional, is now seeking to overturn the ACA in its entirety. "And we will have that discussion".

Barr served previously as attorney general in the early 1990s, in the George H.W. Bush administration. Judiciary committee members have voted to authorize Nadler to subpoena that material if necessary.

Boeing cutting 737 MAX production in wake of two deadly crashes
Upcoming software updates to its automated control system will make it "among the safest airplanes ever to fly", Muilenburg said . On Thursday, Boeing recognized the similarities between the two crashes, and acknowledged the role of its anti-stall system.

"My question is with regard to your March 24th and 29th letters to the Judiciary Committees, is Special Counsel Mueller or anyone in his team, on his team, have a role in drafting them or reviewing them in events?"

They have said they want to review the underlying evidence after Barr in his letter said that Mueller's investigation did not establish collusion with Russian Federation. Barr said each redaction will have "explanatory notes to describe the basis for each redaction".

Cartwright noted that if the law was struck down, millions of people who get their coverage through the ACA marketplace would lose their coverage and "tens of millions more would see their premiums skyrocket".

Barr said the White House did not review his letter, but he declined to answer questions about whether the White House has been briefed on the report.

"I have said what I'm going to say about the report today", Barr said. "And I'm not going to say anything more about it until the report is out and everyone has a chance to look at it".

Barr's answers did not appear to satisfy Democrats, who repeatedly urged Barr to release the full report and fully explain any redactions that Barr chose to make.

The chairman of the Ways and Means subcommittee, Democrat Jose Serrano, told Barr there were "serious concerns about the process by which you formulated your letter; and uncertainty about when we can expect to see the full report".

House Appropriations Committee Chairman Nita Lowey (D-NY) on Tuesday called Barr's handling of Mueller's report "unacceptable".

Mueller submitted his report on March 22. Serrano told reporters it was "too important" not to do everything to try to force its release. One issue he stressed was a need for immigration judges.
