  • Trump administration expected to designate Iran's IRGC as a terrorist group

Iranian officials have cautioned the United States against pushing ahead with a rumoured move to designate Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) a "terrorist" group, warning it could destabilise the region and draw a tit-for-tat response.

Heshmatollah Falahat Pishe, chairman of the Iran's parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, told Tasnim news agency that the Iranian parliament has prepared a motion in this regard.

Meanwhile, a year ago Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats cautioned the administration designating the IRGC could pose dangers to U.S. forces, according to one source familiar with the matter.

The expected shift in Washington's policy was initially reported by the Wall Street Journal on Friday, which cited unnamed U.S. officials claiming it could be rolled out as soon as Monday.

The Wall Street Journal was the first publication to report the expected designation.

"#NetanyahuFirsters who have long agitated for FTO (Foreign Terrorist Organisation) of the IRGC fully understand its consequences for U.S. forces in the region".

On 26 March, the United States introduced a new round of sanctions against Iran by adding 16 entities and nine individuals to the sanctions list over their alleged financial support of the IRGC and other units of the Iranian Armed Forces. They pledged to respond in kind against any action taken by the USA against Iran's armed forces.

He added that if the United States endangers Iran's national security, Tehran will take reciprocal measures against Washington as well.

"One might even suggest, since it's hard to see why this is in our interest, if the president isn't looking for a basis for a conflict", said Sherman, who is director of the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Set up after the 1979 Islamic Revolution to protect the Shiite clerical ruling system, the IRGC is Iran's most powerful security organization.

The force is in charge of Iran's ballistic missiles and nuclear programmes, and answers directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
