Kirstjen Nielsen to Resign From Department of Homeland Security

  • Trump speaks to reporters as Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen looks on in the Rose Garden after the president met with U.S. Congressional leaders about the government shutdown and border secu

"Despite our progress in reforming homeland security for a new age, I have determined that it is the right time for me to step aside", Nielsen said in a resignation letter she later shared on Twitter.

The departure announcement comes just days after Nielsen visited the U.S. -Mexico border in Calexio, California, with Trump.

In a tweet, the president thanked her for her service and said she would be temporarily replaced by Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan.

"Nielsen's expected departure is a part of a massive DHS overhaul engineered and directed by top Trump adviser Stephen Miller, according to a senior US official", the report said.

But by October she was back at DHS, this time as secretary.

Ms Nielsen was viewed as resistant to some of the harshest immigration measures supported by the president and his aides, particularly senior adviser Stephen Miller, both around the border and on other matters like protected status for some refugees. The president recently vowed to cut all US foreign aid to Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador and has repeatedly threatened to close ports of entry to and from Mexico if the country's government does not do more to prevent migrants from the Northern Triangle from reaching the southern border.

CBS News reported that it was not clear whether Kirstjen meant to resign voluntarily or chose to step down under the pressure.

One former White House official told The Post that she was "no doubt" pushed out of the job, which she's held since December 2017.

She has drawn criticism for her staunch defence of some of Mr Trump's most contentious border policies.

Kelly resigned as chief of staff on January 2 amid reports of a strained relationship with Trump.

Representative Bennie Thompson, the Democratic chairman of the House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee, said Nielsen's tenure at DHS "was a disaster from the start".

Nielsen's position had been rocky for some time.

Nielsen defended the administration's "zero tolerance" policy, and many called for her resignation. She ushered DHS through several crises, including a public outcry over a departmental policy of separating minor children from parents declaring asylum at the United States-Mexican border.
