Federal Bureau of Investigation says DNA results show teen who claimed he was missing Aurora boy is not Timmothy Pitzen.
The FBI said that federal "law enforcement has not and will not forget Timmothy, and we hope to one day reunite him with his family".
Authorities are trying to confirm the identity of a 14-year-old boy who told police in Newport, Kentucky, that he escaped two kidnappers in the Cincinnati area and ran across a bridge.
As of Thursday evening, charges had not been filed against Rini for orchestrating the hoax.
Timmothy Pitzen, 6, of Aurora, was last seen at a Wisconsin Dells Resort with his 43-year-old mother.
In a twist to the story, several USA news outlets are now reporting that Police in Newport, Kentucky, told news station Local 12 he was actually identified as 23-year-old Brian Michael Rini. "Unfortunately, that day will not be today", Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman Timothy Beam said in a statement. "He didn't produce a driver's license but gave a name and Social Security number", said a report from the Norton Police Department posted on the Norton Post.
Police from Aurora, Illinois, where Timmothy had lived before he disappeared, quickly made attempts to verify the teen's claims - including requesting a DNA test, which has since proved that wrong.
Police have said Timmothy's mother might have dropped the boy off with a friend, noting that his auto seat and Spider-Man backpack were gone.
The grandmother of an IL boy missing since 2011 says she's trying not to get her hopes up after hearing that he might be alive. I knew he was alive.
A witness said the person looked like he had been beat up. The boy was taken to a hospital, but no information was released. One had black, curly hair, wore a Mountain Dew shirt and jeans and had a spider web tattoo on his neck. The other man is described as short with a snake tattoo on his arms.
The teen told authorities that he and the alleged kidnappers had been staying at a Red Roof Inn, but he did not know in what town.
"Perhaps, it has people looking at the case with new eyes", the police sergeant said.
"I just can't imagine what he's been going through", said Troy Murphey, Pitzen's high school classmate, before the news of the hoax.
Three days later, the mother's body was found in a hotel room in Rockford, Illinois.
The person found in Kentucky claiming to be a boy that has been missing for seven years is actually a 23-year-old man from Medina, according to Newport, Kentucky police chief Thomas Collins.
Nearly eight years ago, Timmothy and his mother went on a road trip that included stops at a zoo and a water park. Police also found credit card receipts showing she bought children's clothing and toys in Wisconsin. They asked anyone with genuine information about the case to call Aurora police at 630-256-5000 or the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children at 1-800-843-5678.
"Tim is somewhere safe with people who love him and will care for him", she wrote in the note, according to reports by ABC7 Chicago. DNA results have been returned indicating the person in question is not Timmothy Pitzen.
