Brunei on Wednesday introduced new sharia laws, including death by stoning for adultery and gay sex, despite a storm of global criticism from politicians, celebrities and rights groups.

However, current Sultan and acting Prime minister Hassanal Bolkiah said in a statement that Brunei is "a sovereign Islamic and fully independent country and, like all other independent countries, enforces its own rule of law".

The country's leader, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, has supported the strict Islamic teachings and insisted his nation was a "fair and happy place".

Before the new legal regime commenced, homosexuality was illegal and punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment, but under the changes Brunei has become the first Asian country to make homosexuality punishable by death. "Canada must stand with the United Nations and the many other countries around the world who have condemned this legislation and echo that this is a serious setback for human rights".

Celebrities George Clooney and Ellen Degeneres are also supporting a boycott of the Dorchester Collection hotel chain, which are operated by the Brunei Investment Agency headed by the Sultan.

The German president's office said that orders awarded during state visits can not be revoked, but stressed President Frank-Walter Steinmeier's rejection of the death penalty and stance that threatening gay people with "cruel punishments" violates elementary human rights.

The State Department's 2014 Religious Freedom Report cited officials from Brunei as saying "the harshest punishments will rarely, if ever, be applied because of the extremely high standards of proof required, such as requiring four pious men to personally witness an act of fornication to support a sentence of stoning".

It's all covered under the new Brunei Sharia Penal Code.

"As a citywide elected official, I represent a diverse community of Angelenos, and I call on everyone to boycott the hotels owned by Brunei's royal family", LA Controller Ron Galperin said in a statement. The fight is never over we're only scratching the surface but we need to be louder than ever.

Meanwhile, the gay community in Brunei has been forced to flee.

Almost two-thirds of Malaysia's 32 million people are Muslim.

Starting today, offences such as rape, robbery and defamation of the Prophet Muhammad will carry the death penalty, while theft will be punishable by amputation.

Australian Senator Penny Wog claimed Brunei's penal code would be in breach of the UN Declaration of Human Rights.

"New Zealand has a broad relationship with Brunei which includes a modest trading relationship", the spokesperson said.

In light of the new anti-gay laws, Virgin Australia on Wednesday confirmed it had severed its staff travel deal with the sultanate's national carrier.

A spokesman for the university said: "The University of Aberdeen is inclusive and open to all".

They are particularly concerned "that the penal code applies to all those who board a Brunei-registered aircraft even when in Australia".
