Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: 'Defeat 'is a big step backwards'

"I think we've shown against PSG that on any given day we can beat a top team", said Solskjaer.

"This was a big step backwards, mainly because of the quality of the possession and the passing".

Nuno heaped praise on goalscorers Jimenez and Jota after the match at a bouncing Molineux, where the manager is revered after leading them from the Championship and into the upper reaches of the Premier League and now an FA Cup semi-final. "We had a couple of balls in behind for Rashford but not enough quality".

Despite having much of the ball and countless opportunities to put themselves in front, the Red Devils never really troubled the Wanderers.

"You can look behind the result and say that was a good performance, but we didn't get what we deserved".

"This was the poorest we've played", Solskjaer told BBC Sport.

Solskjaer will have two weeks to mull over the performance while a number of his players head off to join their national teams.

Shootings reported at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand
Bangladesh are scheduled to play New Zealand in the third and final Test of the series starting from Saturday. Player Tamim Iqbal tweeted that it was a "frightening experience" and that there were "active shooters".

However, the whistle was blown soon after, sealing United's first successive defeat since Solskjaer took over as caretaker manager.

"You can't sit and sulk too long", he said. "We will respect everybody in the semi-finals".

"So, to give them back this joy and seeing our fans going out of the stadium with a smile - with a lot of beer, of course -feels good".

True, they remain in the Champions League following a remarkable fightback against Paris Saint-Germain, but with Barcelona looming in the quarterfinals, only the staunchest Solskjaer loyalist would argue that European glory would have been easier to clinch than the FA Cup.

"We've played so much worse and won games and that's the unusual thing when you're a manager".

"We've been on a good run now.it's not "squeaky bum time" like the gaffer used to say, but it tightens up".

"If they hadn't had [David] De Gea behind, then they certainly wouldn't have won as many games as they have".
