  • Christchurch shooting: Sajid Javid slams Australian Senator Fraser Anning over comments

Australian Senator Fraser Anning was held back by the security personnel after he punched a young man who was protesting against the comments of the senator regarding the Christchurch mosque terror attacks.

An unnamed young man threw an egg at Anning during a press conference in Melbourne.

Senator Anning struck the 17-year-old twice after the teenager broke an egg on his head while he spoke to media at a political meeting in Moorabbin, in Melbourne's south-east yesterday.

Senator Anning responded: "Well he's obviously a little on the insane side, but yeah".

Connolly was initially arrested and released without charge.

In his statement, shared widely on Twitter, Anning said he was utterly opposed to any form of violence and condemned the actions of the gunman.

Queensland Senator Fraser Anning, a far-right independent politician, tweeted last Friday: "Does anyone still dispute the link between Muslim immigration and violence?"

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced that Parliament would pass a motion next month censuring Anning for his statements about the Christchurch attack.

"Those views have no place in Australia, let alone the Australian Parliament".

The statement received condemnation from Egyptian parliamentarians, including Member of Parliament Dr. Mohamed Fouad who released a statement in English condemning Senator Anning's "hateful remarks" and "despicable words".

Morrison called his comments "disgusting" and that they have "no place in Australia".

"Rather than demonstrating empathy and compassion, he has chosen instead to vent his racist prejudice and hatred against Islam and Muslims by blaming the victims instead of the criminal perpetrators", he said in a statement today.

The 69-year-old politician then turns around and smacks the boy in the face before taking a second swing at the teen.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he denounced Anning's comments.

Earlier in the day, Anning had repeated his claims that Muslim immigration was to blame for Friday's attack, the Herald reported. The allusion was to his usual trope of Muslims' and immigrants' incompatibility with the Australian or Western way of life.

"I do wonder if he's made Australians less safe overseas", he said.

"For somebody to use the privilege of Parliament, the privilege of this platform, to spew such hate is beyond comprehension", Anne Aly, the body's first female Muslim member, told the Times then.

Meanwhile, a petition calling for Senator Anning to be removed from office has more than 225,000 signatures.
