"London stands with the people of Christchurch in the face of this horrific terror attack", he said.

On Friday morning, terrorists attacked two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand and killed 49 people.

NZ Police closed the Christchurch court to the public over security concerns, but media was able to attend.

He did not request bail and was taken into custody until his next court appearance scheduled for April 5.

The 59-year-old Canadian songwriter was due to appear at Hagley Park in the New Zealand city on Sunday, but has since put the concert on hold following the tragic attack. Police found multiple explosive devices in vehicles stopped as the shootings unfolded; the devices have since been defused.

The Chicago office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations said it was not aware of any threats locally but urged mosques and Muslim centers "to take increased security precautions".

Speaking to reporters at the signing for his first veto, which struck down an attempt to reject his national emergency declaration, Trump spoke about the shooting carried out at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Most if not all of the victims were gunned down by an immigrant-hating white supremacist who apparently used a helmet-mounted camera to broadcast live video of the slaughter on Facebook.

"I was running and there was a guy [who] said there was a shooting in the mosque so I was running, while I was running there was a lady being shot", he said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statement condemned the attacks as terrorism and said everyone must work to "confront Islamophobia". "Hopefully she will be so much better", he said.

Two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found in a auto and neutralized by the military, while police raided a home in Dunedin, where Ardern said the suspect was based.

He had livestreamed the shooting on Facebook.

"Many of those affected may be migrants to New Zealand".

The visiting Bangladesh cricket team narrowly avoided the shooting after arriving at the mosque for prayers.

NSW police commissioner Mick Fuller said Australian police would investigate to help New Zealand authorities and also "make sure that he hasn't slipped through the cracks" in Australia, but said there were "no links back to New South Wales at the moment".

A witness described the sound of gunfire breaking out just as the prayer leader began his sermon at a mosque.

CNN cites a 2015 study that reported New Zealand had an adjusted rate of about 1 gun death per 100,000 people, while in 2017, the United States has an adjusted rate of 12 gun deaths per 100,000 people.

"Horrified to hear of Christchurch mosque shootings".

He said he never would have expected anything like this could happen in Christchurch.
