Facebook struggles into day two of global outage

  • Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp suffered a global outage. What happened?

Facebook experienced a similar outage in 2008 when it had 150 million users. "We are very sorry for the inconvenience and we appreciate everyone's patience".

On Twitter, Facebook said early in the outage that it is "focused on working to resolve the issue as soon as possible, but can confirm that the issue is not related to a DDoS attack".

From about noon NY time Wednesday, global users encountered only partially loaded pages or no content at all on Facebook's main social network and its related services, including photo-sharing site Instagram and messaging tools Messenger and WhatsApp.

Thursday morning, outage-tracking website DownDetector.com showed a steep drop in reports of Facebook problems between Wednesday and Thursday morning.

DownDetector website - one of the internet's most used sources of numbers on outages - showed the number of complaints had peaked at more than 12,000, gradually falling to about 180 as of 11am EST on Thursday. The interruption also affected gameplay for owners of Oculus VR headsets, a company that Facebook bought in 2014. Beyond Instagram's tweet, Facebook has provided no further updates in the hours since then.

Maryland sophomore Bruno Fernando has been named an all-Big Ten first-team selection, the conference announced Monday. He's also in contention for Big Ten Player of the Year and has an outside shot at National Player of the Year honors.

As of March 14, Facebook has not issued a statement as to the cause of the outage. Dan Patterson, senior producer at CNET, told CBSN that cybersecurity experts were unable to shed light on the issue.

Facebook, the world's largest social network, had to turn to its rival Twitter to explain that its group of hugely popular apps were having difficulties.

In November, a Facebook outage was attributed to a server problem, and a September disruption was said to be the result of "networking issues".

Regulators, investigators and elected officials in the USA and elsewhere in the world have already been digging into the data sharing practices of Facebook.

Meanwhile, it's also believed that a New York Times report contributed to the drop in Facebook's shares. And Spotify and Netflix reportedly were allowed to see user private message information.
