  • What Is a Bomb Cyclone: All About the Winter Weather Storm Hitting This Week

An intense and ferocious winter storm - a "bomb cyclone" - is expected to bring hurricane-force wind gusts, blizzard conditions and a flood threat across a swath of the United States heartland Wednesday.

Such a rapid pressure decrease is defined as a drop of at least 24 millibars in 24 hours.

Another winter storm is brewing and could affect upward of 70 million people living in the Central and Northern Plains and the Upper Midwest.

A massive winter storm called a "bomb cyclone" is set to hit portions of the United States on Wednesday, bringing risky heavy snow, flooding and thunderstorms to the central part of the country. According to FlightAware, more than 1,400 Wednesday flights have already been canceled. Groves, on the job since 2007, was declared dead at a hospital.

The weather service said thunderstorms are possible with moderate to heavy rain in the lower valleys. The highest wind gust was at Colorado Springs airport of a whopping 97 miles per hour.

Winter Storm Ulna is expected to bring one to two feet of snow along with ferocious winds to parts of Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska, according to USA Today.

Parts of seven states were under blizzard warnings, and 20 states were under some level of high wind alert, Carbin said.

Wind will continue to be the main impactor throughout this time as wind speeds surpass 60 miles per hour in some spots, implying power outages and road conditions will not improve. Almost all of the flights leaving or arriving to Aspen on Wednesday have been canceled.

Our Blizzard Warning will be in place through midnight, with the worst conditions moving to the eastern plains.

That's charging miles per hour, which determines how quickly you can pull out of the charging station and back onto the highway. On Wednesday night, Tesla announced that it has developed a new, faster Supercharger for its electric vehicles.

Travel may be impossible, CNN reports, and both flights and schools are being canceled in areas where the white-out blizzard may hit.

At 8:30 a.m. officials with the county announced both Dillon Dam and Swan Mountain roads are closed due to adverse weather conditions. And a 300-mile (483-kilometer) section of I-25 was closed from the small city of Buffalo to the Colorado border.

Utah: The Beehive State appears to be on the back end of the storm.

As this system continues to pull more to the east, our winds will gradually improve and snow will clear.

Wind gusts of 50mph to 70mph are expected across Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas, while some areas could see hurricane-force gusts of 100mph.

The storm is forecast to rapidly intensify overnight Wednesday east of the Colorado Rockies and trek slowly northeast through Thursday, delivering a variety of extreme weather from New Mexico to the Midwest.

The hazardous winds are bringing rain and snow to known areas like the Rocky Mountains, the Plains, the Mississippi Valley and the Great lakes region, putting up to 70 million people in its path.

'We could have the potential for major river flooding, given the rain and the snow melt, ' meteorologist Mark Chenard said from the NWS Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.
