Tesla launches speedy Supercharger 3.0 and pledges to halve charging times

The company says with just 5 minutes of charging, you can get up to 75 miles, or 120 kilometres.
That's charging miles per hour, which determines how quickly you can pull out of the charging station and back onto the highway. Ideal for those quick bathroom stops. But times change, and companies like ElectrifyAmerica and ChargePoint are rolling out new DC Fast chargers for these standards that are capable of recharging a vehicle at much higher power-350kW in the case of ElectrifyAmerica and 500kW in the case of ChargePoint. It includes entirely new hardware, including grid-connected batteries to act as a buffer to stabilize electrical loads (and reduce demand charges from utilities).
The 250kW Version 3 (V3) Supercharger is a new design that enables you to charge at full power rather than having to split charging with another vehicle that's also charging.
Once update, if the Tesla auto owner is on its way to the nearest Supercharger stations, the vehicle will intelligently heat the battery.
Power is delivered to the vehicle via a new liquid-cooled cable design that Tesla claims is actually lighter and more flexible than the current air-cooled cable.
In addition, Tesla is also rolling out a new feature called On-Route Battery Warmup. For now, that means completely overhauled superchargers.
How much the Models S and X will benefit is as yet unknown; Tesla confirmed with The Driven earlier this week that the "new" Standard, Long Range and Performance Model S and Long Range and Performance Model X will continue to use the 18650 battery cells.
The first "non-beta" V3 Supercharger site will break ground next month.
On Wednesday night, Tesla announced that it has developed a new, faster Supercharger for its electric vehicles. More will become available in this year's second and third quarter, with Europe and Asia-Pacific regions following by the end of the year.
For those using the V2 chargers (which will also have an additional 25kW unlocked in coming weeks, totaling 145kW), the battery warm up will also improve charging speeds by 25%, according to the EV maker.
And it charges the almost 200,000 Model 3 sedans that are here in the USA today, getting drivers on their way very quickly, in time for summer road trips.
