European Union says 'no solution' yet to Brexit deadlock

Richard Corbett, a Labour member of the European Parliament, said the planned funding was 'far less than what these towns will lose due to Brexit.

Theresa May has been accused of a "cynical last-minute attempt to buy support" for her Brexit deal after announcing a £1.6billion fund for deprived towns. "But from day one we have been very straight about a few things and among those is that Brexit can not lead, under any circumstances, to the emergence of a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland".

The Brady amendment, which passed through the Commons by 318 votes to 310 on January 29, called for "the Northern Ireland backstop to be replaced with alternative arrangements to avoid a hard border" and said a deal on leaving the European Union would be dependent on its being removed. It is understood to include a legally binding mechanism that would allow Britain to escape the backstop.

The spokesman added Britain will "continue to pursue" parliament's demand for legally binding changes to ensure "the United Kingdom won't be trapped in the backstop indefinitely".

"We're now at a particularly critical stage in these negotiations", said the spokesman.

May must bring her accord back to parliament for a vote before March 12.

"For too long in our country prosperity has been unfairly spread". That must be a change for the better, with more opportunity and greater control.

She added: "These towns have a glorious heritage, huge potential and, with the right help, a bright future ahead of them".

Shadow chancellor John McDonnell branded the initiative a "desperate bribe".

When and where to watch the NFL Combine’s on-field workouts
I know Murray has tons of doubters out there because he doesn't look or play like the prototypical gunslinger in the NFL. The Cardinals selecting Murray would be fantastic news for the San Francisco 49ers, who don't need a quarterback.

Labour said the initiative 'smacks of desperation from a government reduced to bribing MPs to vote for their damaging flagship Brexit legislation.

Asked whether the Government would back no-deal in the vote scheduled for the following day if the agreement fails, he said: "Potentially all things are possible".

Voters will not be deceived, especially those in areas where they voted for the Brexit, but who want a second referendum now because they know that any withdrawal will affect their future, Soubry noted.

However, the government justified the fund as an initiative to create new jobs, train people and boost economic activity.

Of the £1 billion being allocated using a needs-based formula, the North West gets £281 million, the West Midlands £212m, Yorkshire and the Humber £197m, the East Midlands £110m, the North East £105m, the South East £37m, the South West £35m and the East of England £25m.

As well as the money being dished out by region another £600m will be available through a bidding process to communities in any part of the country.

Mr Cox said the two sides had exchanged "robust, strong views" in the negotiations.

As May seeks to win over lawmakers, a group of prominent Brexit rebels set out the changes they want to see to the agreement in return for their support: it must be legally binding, clear and set out an exit route for the backstop.
