Apple is trying to boost its revenue from services, and its next major introduction is expected to be a paid news subscription through the Apple News app on iOS. News orgs like The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Wall Street Journal busily built their own subscription services in recent years.

Apple, which has taken its time developing a strategy for entering the crowded streaming video field, is targeting springtime for the launch of a new streaming clearinghouse, according to multiple reports.

Publishers are threatening to revolt against Apple's planned subscription news service before it has even got off the ground in anger at the proposed financial terms stipulated by the technology firm.

Reuters and CNBC today have reported that the new venture would offer customers an experience featuring subscription offerings from the likes of CBS, Starz, Viacom and possibly HBO.

Apple doesn't typically hold more than one spring media event, though it could this year.

The launch would be Apple's latest push to grow its services revenue with a goal of hitting $50 billion (R687 billion) by 2020. We've appreciated Apple's thoughtfulness and leadership on a number publisher concerns over the past year.

More information from the website states that pre-orders for the AirPods 2, AirPower and new iPads will start on Friday, March 22, with the devices officially available starting March 29. Sources tell BuzzFeed News that the company plans to hold a special event on March 25 at the Steve Jobs Theater on its Apple Park campus. Paid subscriptions though the iOS news app could roll out as early as March 25.

In addition to asking for a revenue cut that is way higher than what App Store publishers must pay, Apple is also asking for select publishers to commit to using the news platform for a minimum of one year.

An Apple spokesperson declined to comment when contacted by ZDNet. The company has been working on a news subscription service that works similar to Netflix for a while, and it's getting ready to launch the service next month.
