The accusations against Fairfax rocked an administration that was already struggling amid calls for the resignation of Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam over a racist photo that appeared on his 1984 medical school yearbook page. Northam denied he was in the photograph but admitted last Saturday he once wore blackface as part of a costume to look like pop star Michael Jackson in the mid-1980s.

Today, Gov. Northam sat down with CBS "This Morning" to discuss the current quagmire his administration finds itself forced to deal with.

According to excerpts of the interview provided on Sunday by CBS, Northam was asked about allegations of sexual crimes, including rape, that have been made by two women against Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax, a fellow Democrat and the state's second-highest elected official.

He said he tasked his Cabinet "to think over the weekend how we could change and make new policy, how we could reshape Virginia through their Cabinet positions".

Mr Northam insists he's "not going anywhere" and believes he is the best person to help the state "heal".

If Fairfax were to leave, it's unclear who could replace him as lieutenant governor.

Northam seemed chastened and subdued as he described a week of grappling with what "white privilege" means, with the reality of African-American history, and with the personal failing of growing up after desegregation and the civil rights era while somehow not realising that donning blackface is offensive.

Northam has refused to step down, despite demands from his peers and adversaries who want him to leave his post.

Northam also offered forgiveness for Herring, who after disclosing that he darkened his face when dressing up like rapper Kurtis Blow in college has largely avoided the blizzard of calls for his resignation that have dogged Fairfax and Northam. Fairfax would become governor if Northam resigns.

We have also learned Senate Majority Leader Thomas K. Norment, R-James City, was the editor of a college yearbook in 1968 that included racially insensitive images and captions.

"It has really raised the level of awareness for racial issues in Virginia".

Fairfax also denied the second allegation on Friday and said he would not resign.

"I actually won the contest", he added.

Virginia fought against interracial marriages until the U.S. Supreme Court's 1967 Loving v. Virginia decision, which struck down state laws banning interracial marriage.

In an updated February 9 statement, Fairfax claimed that his encounters with both women were consensual.

Lawyers for Meredith Watson released a statement Friday alleging that Virginia's No. 2 politician raped her in 2000, while they were both attending Duke University. "Virginia also needs someone who is strong, who has empathy, who has courage and who has a moral compass", Northam said.

Northam's comments echo those he made in a Saturday interview with The Washington Post, where he vowed to devote the rest of his governorship to advancing racial equity in the one-time heart of the Confederacy.

Although the party has taken an nearly zero-tolerance approach to misconduct among its members in this #MeToo era, a housecleaning in Virginia could be costly: If all three Democrats resigned, Republican state House Speaker Kirk Cox would become governor. Krzyzewski said. "So, I'm not sure that's true or not, but there's an allegation". Fairfax has vehemently denied the allegations.

Virginia's current governor, Ralph Northam, as well its attorney general, Mark Herring, have been embroiled in a controversy surrounding use of blackface for the past week.
