Trump Didn´t Consult Military on Withdrawal from Syria

Angus King, I-Maine, to clarify if he had been consulted ahead of the president's announcement in December, Votel responded "I was not consulted". "Certainly we were aware that he had expressed a desire and intent in the past to depart Syria", he said. He also estimated that there are about 20,000 to 30,000 ISIS fighters or sympathizers in the region who have mostly gone to ground and are carrying out sporadic insurgent activities.

However, Trump's latest decision to withdraw USA troops from Syria and his latest controversial remarks concerning US forces in Iraq have, to quite an extent, overshadowed the upcoming meeting.

"We do have to keep pressure on this network".

The withdrawal will fulfil Trump's goal of bringing troops home from Syria, but military leaders have pushed back for months, arguing that ISIS remains a threat and could regroup.

He says battlefield gains in Iraq and Syria must be secured by continued US and global efforts to prevent a return to conditions that allowed the Islamic State group to arise. He credits their combined work against the Islamic State group and notes US forces are going to withdraw from Syria. The text warns that "a precipitous withdrawal" of soldiers could "allow terrorists to regroup, destabilize critical regions and create vacuums that could be filled by Iran or Russian Federation".

Trump is expected to tout USA successes in Syria when he appears before a joint session of Congress to deliver a State of the Union speech at 9 p.m. on Tuesday.

Iran threatens region with missile
The Defence Ministry's website carried an undated video purportedly showing the Hoveizeh being test-fired from a mobile launcher. Tehran has showcased a new, long-range cruise missile, capable of covering over 1,350 kilometers.

Officials said that overall, about 2,000 ISIS militants remain in Syria.

Trump was severely criticized by American politicians for his decision to withdraw troops from Syrian territory, while some versions of the reason for the measure were discussed.

"Currently, ISIS is regenerating key functions and capabilities more quickly in Iraq than in Syria, but absent sustained [counterterrorism] pressure ISIS could likely resurge in Syria within six to twelve months and regain limited territory in the [Middle Euphrates River Valley]", it added.

U.S. officials in recent weeks say Islamic State has lost 99.5 percent of its territory and is holding on to fewer than 10 square kilometres of turf in Syria - an area smaller than New York's Central Park.

The Defense Department watchdog report warned that even with the Islamic State forces on the run, the group "is still able to coordinate offensives and counter-offensives, as well as operate as a decentralized insurgency".

It also says that it is likely ISIS will continue to carry out opportunistic hit-and-run attacks on United States forces and use them to claim "victory" in the media.
