NASRDA: Nigeria to experience total lunar eclipse Monday

  • Telus World of Science to pull all-nighter celebration for total lunar eclipse Sunday

Once the moon is fully covered by the penumbra, it signifies the start of the partial eclipse. Central and eastern Africa, Europe, and Asia will see a partial eclipse of the Moon.

But you may be wondering what that name even means. But there's a little more to it than that. While Earthlings can catch scores of supermoons and blood moons in their lifetime, a combination of the two taking place together in January only happens three times this century.

"Then, as the shadow progresses, at 4.41am the full shadow of the Earth, the umbra, will cross the moon and we shall have the full eclipse until 5.43am".

The red effect is due to Earth's atmosphere.

As our planet's shadow passes the moon, it turns a spooky red colour.

"This is because a small portion of sunlight is refracted by the Earth's atmosphere and mostly red light reaches the Moon", the agency said.

So where does the "wolf" part come in?

The full moons, according to Native American traditions are named differently in different months.

Cousins attempted to debut a few weeks ago
The pace will be different for Cousins, yes, but his presence down low is also a weapon Kerr's Warriors have never had. Having won seven of their last eight games, the Warriors have well and truly put their early season bumps behind them.

The "wolf" reference comes from the term for a full moon in January, according to The Old Farmer's Almanac.

The eclipse begins at 02:35 GMT on Monday and ends at 07:49 GMT, but the period when the whole Moon appears red occurs at 05:12 GMT. Fazekas said the story goes that this is the time of year when wolves are howling and congregating in packs.

A shadow will start to appear on the moon just after 8:30 p.m. and the maximum eclipse - where the moon is completely covered - will happen around 10:12 p.m.

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), through its Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS) has said that there will be a lunar eclipse over Nigeria on Monday, January 21, 2019.

People in North and South America should have a particularly spectacular view of the celestial proceedings, but they will also be visible from Greenland, Iceland, parts of western Europe and parts of Western Africa.

Will you be up to see the lunar eclipse? "And, that's going to last about an hour".

The lunar eclipse will be visible from cities, as long as the weather conditions are right and there aren't too many clouds. What makes this special is the fact that it is a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse. A supermoon happens when the moon is at or near perigee - the closest point to Earth in its orbit.

And it won't be just any lunar eclipse. A live video stream will show the eclipse from other locations around the world. It also affords a unique view of the sky.
