UK PM May: Failure to Back Her Brexit Plan Would Be ‘Catastrophic’

  • There are continuing pro and anti Brexit demonstrators outside the Houses of Parliament in London

A "technical" extension until July is a probable first step to give May extra time to revise and ratify the current deal once Downing Street has a clear idea as to what will command a majority in the Commons.

"I don't like the prospect of a no-deal". With the time it has bought, the government can pursue a new plan, but it will still be working towards a deadline to resolve the same deep political divisions over what Brexit should look like. "We will do everything we can to prevent a no-deal exit".

In the event her exit deal is voted down, some Brexiters have argued for the United Kingdom to leave without a deal, but other MPs also object to the no deal Brexit - calling for either Article 50 to be extended or revoked, or a second referendum to allow the general public to decide the next move. "So we need to explore what those circumstances might be and have an opinion so that how we can proceed from there".

But he indicated May is not ready junk her deal if it's rejected.

"May and her government are not prepared to run down the Article 50 clock and leave the European Union without a withdrawal agreement and transition arrangements in place, although this remains a possible Brexit outcome later in 2019".

The Labour leader again refused to confirm that an immediate challenge to the government would take place if May, as expected, loses Tuesday's key vote on her Brexit plan.

MPs are due to vote on May's deal on Tuesday.

A multitude of possibilities will come into play if Mrs May's deal is defeated in the Commons, throwing Brexit into doubt. And Brexit paralysis ultimately could lead to no Brexit.

"What we're saying to the European Union is: this is the political situation in Britain, where we have a country that's divided on this issue".

Mr Hunt warned: "If we were, as a political class, not to deliver Brexit, that would be a fundamental breach of trust between the people and the politicians".

More than 100 Conservative MPs have already declared their intention to vote against May's deal.

Speaking a few weeks after calling off a previous vote on her withdrawal agreement because she knew it would be rejected, Mrs May will ask MPs to consider various scenarios.

In this instance, the United Kingdom would leave the European Union on March 29. In his Daily Telegraph column he wrote: "If you ask me what I think of this plot, and indeed of the risk that Parliament will somehow thwart Brexit, I am afraid I think it is all nonsense". "We have seen from this week that parliament has the ability to assert itself and to shape outcomes".

Meanwhile, London mayor Sadiq Khan has written in the Observer suggesting that Mrs May should step down and call a general election if she loses next week's vote. It will require the Speaker, John Bercow, to suspend centuries-old rules and make it easier for MPs to table laws that can be passed. If we've learned anything from recent and more distant history, it is surely this.

The Prime Minister faces widespread opposition to the existing agreement, primarily because of language created to prevent the reintroduction of physical border controls between Northern Ireland and Ireland.
