New Poll Finds Americans Overwhelmingly Blame Trump More Than Democrats for Shutdown

  • President Donald Trump told a White House meeting with state and local officials he was not about to declare a national emergency to fund his controversial border wall project

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, the new chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee and a Trump ally, said he was astonished that law enforcement officials had sought to investigate whether Trump was an agent of the Russians.

Then once the shutdown actually began, Trump predictably shifted the blame to Democrats, tweeting on December 30, "Great work by my Administration over the holidays to save Coast Guard pay during this #SchumerShutdown".

- House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy of California to CBS' "Face the Nation" on the $5.7 billion Trump wants for the U.S. -Mexico border wall. "If we can't at the end of three weeks, all bets are off".

The shutdown enters its fourth week next week, with Trump's threat to declare a national emergency still on the table.

The same poll, however, showed increased support for Trump on one issue: a wall at the U.S.

Trump also shared on Saturday that should the Democrats change their mind about funding the border wall, the shutdown could end in a matter of minutes. The president initially sounded as though such a move was imminent, but then pulled back.

Graham said he planned to ask William Barr, the president's nominee for attorney general, during his confirmation hearing this week whether he trusted Mueller and his team to be fair and whether he saw any reason to fire the special counsel.

Fifty-three percent in the national survey said that Trump and congressional Republicans are mainly responsible for the shutdown, while 29 percent blamed congressional Democrats, almost a 2-1 margin against the president and his party.

A predictable partisan divide shapes the blame game, with 85 percent of Democrats citing Trump and Republicans as the cause and 68 percent of Republicans pointing the finger at congressional Democrats.

Chelsea agree to sign Gonzalo Higuain as Alvaro Morata heads for Sevilla
Alvaro Morata has failed to impress and wants a return to Spain, with Sevilla and Atletico Madrid among the clubs interested in him.

Democrats oppose that step but may be unable to stop it and many Republicans are wary too.

While a national emergency would provide some legal framework for his administration to freely move funds toward construction of a barrier, it would nearly certainly face court challenges.

The senator added that Trump might be willing to reach an agreement that would include border wall funding and protections for beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, as well as for those receiving temporary protected status.

Trump has maintained that the border can not be secured without a wall.

Trump sent a series of Twitter messages on the shutdown Sunday morning, including one that returned to an original theme of his 2016 presidential campaign: that many immigrants are criminals.

"I would hate to see it". By more than 2-1 (66 percent to 31 percent), Americans say they oppose invoking an emergency to build a border wall.

Prior to making his statement, Graham, R-SC, along with Senate Republicans colleagues, attempted last week to integrate an "immigration fix" that included border wall funding in the legislation but Democrats failed to accept the compromise.

"It's the last option, not the first option, but we're pretty close to that being the only option", he said. He reiterated those same feelings on Sunday during a Fox interview with Chris Wallace.

Graham and Coons spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Johnson appeared on CNN's "State of the Union".
