Recent news reports and court filings suggest that Mueller may be nearing the end of his investigation, at which point he is supposed to turn over a confidential final report to the Justice Department.

Experts immediately reflected on the landmark nature of the story, coming as it has after two years of reporting about Trump associates' interactions with Russians and their attempts to cover them up; Trump's solicitous behavior toward Putin, despite the USA intelligence community's assessment that Russian hackers, under Putin's direction, had interfered in the 2016 election; and Trump's repeated public rejections of that assessment, including his refusal to implement sanctions against Russia that were near-unanimously passed by Congress. Was he working ... wittingly or unwittingly working on their behalf?

Just under a year later, Trump tweeted that Comey wasn't fired over the Russian Federation investigation.

The inquiry forced counterintelligence investigators to evaluate if Mr Trump was deliberately working for Russian Federation or if he had unintentionally been influenced by Moscow, according to the report.

The bureau struck a counterintelligence investigation into the matter after Trump fired director James Comey, the Times reported, citing ex-law enforcement officials and others who were familiar with the probe.

The special counsel's team is investigating whether Russian Federation and the Trump campaign colluded during the 2016 presidential election and any obstruction of justice claims.

Ralf Speth, JLR's chief executive, placed part of the blame for the cull on the "continuing uncertainty related to Brexit". The auto industry has suffered a triple blow as three of the UK's biggest manufacturers announced job and production cuts.

The White House on Friday night dismissed The New York Times report as "absurd".

The president's decisions and the firing of Comey prompted the agency to launch the inquiry. Mr Mueller was appointed within days of Mr Comey's firing.

Trump's longtime lawyer and aide Michael Cohen is set to begin a three-year prison sentence in March after pleading guilty to fraud, campaign finance violations and lying under oath.

McCabe said he believed Comey was sacked because he refused to give in to Trump's requests to kill the probe. But, added to everything already known about contacts between Trump associates and Russian individuals - all of which were initially denied - this raises multiple red flags.

"This shows that Bob Mueller can demonstrate to a court, without the testimony of Paul Manafort, that the campaign had a connection to Russian intelligence and the connection involved information going from the campaign to the Russians", Fox News legal analyst Judge Andrew Napolitano said Wednesday.
