And as a result, it not just went neck in neck for both players but the match also lasted almost two and a half hours before the victor was decided.

In the other quarter-finals, second seed Julia Goerges plays Eugenie Bouchard and third seed Hsieh Su-wei is up against Sara Sorribes Tormo.

"She's beat some really good players and this was probably the strongest draw the ASB Classic has had in the women's game here".

The 18-year-old qualifier's 6-3, 6-3 semi-final triumph followed victories over two former world number ones, the now number three Caroline Wozniacki and seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams.

Williams, who had been a professional for six years before Andreescu was born, took the first set and broke Andreescu at the start of the second. "I fought and I really enjoyed myself".

"I know I have nothing to lose, this is my first WTA 250 [final] so I'm just going to try and enjoy every moment".

The contest against Wozniacki was Andreescu's first match in history against a top-10 player.

Women form 385-mile 'wall' in protest against against Sabarimala temple ban
News channels reported the chief priest briefly shut the temple for " purification " rituals after the women visited. Instead the state is run by a coalition of left-wing parties which have said they will enforce the court ruling.

Anisimova, ranked 96th in the world and the youngest player in the top 100, never dropped a game against the Czech veteran and cashed in on all three break points that went her way. She admitted she was tense.

The match was a topsy-turvy affair, with the Canadian's impressive variety and depth on her groundstrokes giving the 37-year-old Williams - who is over twice Andreescu's age - everything she could handle.

"I will do my best in the season to get to the finals here", Sabalenka said.

She followed that up with a 6-3, 6-3 semifinal victory over Hsieh Su-Wei, who is now ranked 28th in the world.

Goerges - the second seed - needed just 86 minutes to secure her ninth successive win at this tournament, having raced out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set.

Goerges clinched the second set in 45 minutes with a pivotal break in the 11th game, then took the deciding third set in only 23 minutes as Andreescu exhausted in her eighth match at the tournament.

Kuzmova of Slovakia beat Sofia Kenin from the US in three sets.
