  • Tennis Perth Roger Federer cruises to win at Hopman Cup

Federer managed to get off to a good start at the Hopman Cup - an global tournament that sees countries compete with mixed gender teams - when he beat Great Britain's Cameron Norrie 6-1 6-1 yesterday (30 December).

The Swiss maestro, who is now playing at the Hopman Cup, barely broke a bead of sweat as he blitzed through his opening match, putting Switzerland in the driver's seat against Great Britain.

Serena's outing comes as she prepares to compete against Swiss tennis star Roger Federer for the very first time as their two countries go head-to-head in the Cup for a mixed doubles matching.

Who will be more excited when they face off against each other - Roger Federer or Serena Williams?

Serena Williams beat Maria Sakkari 7-6 (3), 6-2 in their Hopman Cup singles encounter - but the United States lost the tie to Greece following the mixed doubles decider.

"It is still early days, but I feel like I have played some sets and points in practice, so you kind of know where you are", Federer said. The US lost to Greece on Monday, though Williams won her singles match.

"In the corridors and cafes, walking by each other, sometimes in the past she has asked me how are the kiddies and how is everyone doing, but if I said I know her it would be a bit of an exaggeration".

American detained on spy charges in Moscow
The FSB, which said the American had been detained on December 28, added that a criminal case had been opened against him. Alexander Mikhailov, a retired FSB officer, said the arrest reflected the effectiveness of Russian counterintelligence.

Williams and Federer, both 37, have shared the court when winning Grand Slam titles on the same weekend eight times, most recently in 2017.

"I don't know her that well", he said.

The Swiss legend was so much better than Norrie that for once the crowd was even backing the Brit that looked hopeless against the Maestro. It was a great match for me.

"It is going to be one time, probably never again".

They will play in men's and women's singles rubbers before meeting in the mixed doubles alongside partners Belinda Bencic and Frances Tiafoe.

Taking to the court on Tuesday (January 1st), Serena and Roger - along with his Switzerland team-mate Belinda Bencic - will go head-to-head in a match that has been compared to the iconic 1973 Battle Of The Sexes.

Federer and Bencic beat Britain's Cameron Norrie and Katie Boulter in their opening round-robin tie, while the US lost to Greece on Monday despite Williams winning her singles tie.
