This morning Dawson was arrested at the home of his twin brother on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.
Just before 8am (local time) on Wednesday, Dawson was arrested by Queensland Police detectives in the presence of Strike Force Scriven investigators at Biggera Waters on the Gold Coast.
The Teacher's Pet presented evidence suggesting Chris Dawson was responsible for her disappearance, and that authorities had inadequately investigated the matter.
Lyn Dawson was 33 years old when she vanished from her home in Sydney's northern beaches in January 1982, leaving behind two daughters.
Two days after Mrs Dawson went missing, Joanne Curtis, a 16-year-old student at Cromer High School where Mr Dawson was a teacher, moved into the family's home.
Speaking at a press conference following the arrest, NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said over the course of Operation Scriven and the re-launch of the investigation earlier this year, additional evidence was identified that enabled them to build on their case against Chris.
Fuller said in a press conference that New South Wales' unsolved homicide squad began re-investigating Lynette Dawson's disappearance since 2015, but new interviews from the podcast "helped [them] tie pieces of the puzzles together".
Ms Dawson's relatives expressed relief following the arrest, while Chris Dawson's family said they had no doubt he would be found innocent.
While appearing at Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon, he sat quietly looking at the floor, trembling at times with his shirt visibly shaking as he breathed. Inquests previously recommended murder charges against a known suspect, though prosecutors decided there was insufficient evidence.
Former student Robyn Wheeler was vice-captain of the school and has given detectives information about the alleged abuse
Dawson, the subject of globally acclaimed podcast "The Teacher's Pet", has always maintained innocence following Lynette's disappearance in 1982.
He said media reports had contributed to officers gaining additional statements relating to the disappearance.
NSW Police and Forensic Services search the former home of missing woman Lynette Dawson, at Bayview on the northern beaches, in Sydney.
"We haven't given up hope in terms of finding Lynette Dawson's body".
"What is important to me was justice for Lynette Dawson and her family, and today is an important step forward in that", he added.
"We have sold homicide before without identifying the body", he continued.
"Its taken a long haul but its going to be a very good Christmas for our side of the family knowing that we've finally got somewhere and we're going to find out what actually happened through the court system", he told the program.
"We have to also ensure Chris gets due process".
