India, the third-highest contributor, is projected to see emissions rise by 6.3% from 2017.

The second year in a row of growing carbon emissions is a "big worry", New Zealand's leading carbon cycle expert says.

Frank Bainimarama, prime minister of Fiji and president of last year's Cop climate talks, said nations must act now to stave off disaster.

China's emissions accounted for 27% of the global total, and will likely show growth of 4.7% in 2018.

An article published on Thursday in Environmental Research Letters said carbon dioxide emissions from human activities were expected to grow 2.7 per cent in 2018, following growth of 1.6 per cent in 2017.

Mr Trump said his Mr Macron's decision means the French president has reached the same conclusion as his United States counterpart - that the global agreement reached by almost 200 nations in Paris in 2015 is "fatally flawed".

"This growth in global Carbon dioxide emissions puts the goals set out in the Paris Agreement in jeopardy", lead author Corinne Le Quere, director of the Tyndall Centre of Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia, said in a statement.

"Coal is still the mainstay of the Indian economy, and as in China, it will be a challenge for solar and wind to displace coal, given the strong growth in energy use", it said.

"This is bad news", said Andrew Jones, co-director of Climate Interactive, which models greenhouse gas emissions and temperatures but was not part of the research.

China trade war truce: 2 reasons why it's unlikely to last
The price increase sparked a major hit to the roughly $10 billion worth of passenger vehicles the USA sent to China past year . A full-blown resolution was not expected to be reached in Buenos Aires; the issues that divide them are just too hard .

For the USA, it was a combination of a hot summer and cold winter that required more electricity use for heating and cooling.

"So, Paris commitments are not enough to reach the Paris goal".

The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has said that Carbon dioxide emissions must drop 50% by 2030 - and reach "net zero", with no additional leakage into the atmosphere - by 2050 if the rise in Earth's temperature is to be checked at the safer limit of 1.5C.

"Emissions need to peak and rapidly decrease to address climate change".

China increased its emissions to 11.4 billion tons, while the US jumped to a shade under 6 billion tons.

This year's growth in emissions has been attributed to the strong economic growth.

The two-week conference, in Poland's southern coal mining region of Silesia, is expected to work out how governments can report on their efforts to reduce green gas emission and keep global warming within the Paris accord limit.

- Emissions for the European Union, which has unveiled plans to be "climate neutral" with zero emissions overall by 2050, look set for a small decline of just 0.7 per cent.
