Israel sends in bulldozers to destroy cross-border Hezbollah tunnels

  • Israeli soldiers guard near the border with Lebanon in the town of Metulla northern Israel

The move comes just days after Israeli police on Sunday recommended for a third time that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu be indicted on fraud and bribery charges in a scheme to get positive media coverage.

The Israeli military launched an operation Tuesday to "expose and thwart" tunnels it says were built by the Hezbollah militant group that stretch from Lebanon into northern Israel.

Israel today launched an attack on Lebanon in a bid to destroy what it claims are Hezbollah tunnels channelled under the Israel-Lebanon border.

The interior of what Israel says is an attack tunnel dug by the Hezbollah terror group that crossed into Israeli territory from south of the Lebanese village of Kafr Kila, December 4, 2018.

The Israeli military says it has launched an operation meant to "expose and thwart" tunnels built on the border by the Hezbollah militant group.

"The construction of these tunnels, built by Hezbollah and funded by Iran, alongside the ongoing efforts to transfer arms, convert inaccurate projectiles into precision-guided missiles and manufacture precision-guided missiles in Lebanon, are a flagrant violation of Israel's sovereignty and mark yet another stage of Hezbollah's ongoing efforts to expand its military build-up and further destabilize the already volatile region", he added.

The warning follows the announcement that the nation's defense forces have uncovered "Hezbollah terror tunnels" in the solid rock that separates northern Israel from Lebanon.

Israel said the Iranian-backed Shia militant group had been building the tunnels so its forces could infiltrate into the Jewish state from southern Lebanon. "Hamas uses the tunnels for tactical operations".

Convicted Murderer, MS-13 Gang Members Snuck Into US With Caravan
Asylum seekers are often released in the US pending the outcome of their cases in immigration court. Homeland Security said he and the two men he was caught with are being processed for deportation.

"Whoever tries to harm Israel's security will pay dearly", Netanyahu said in a statement.

Conricus said that Hezbollah has been developing an offensive plan against Israel that would "shift the battleground into Israel". A small explosion scared him away and the tunnel was later blown up with a more powerful blast.

It said the army had boosted its presence and readiness and was prepared for "various scenarios".

"He's half the Israeli government, practically", Kiriakou commented on what is considered to be the "one genuine democracy in the Middle East" by outgoing US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.

Israel has long warned that Hezbollah planned to conduct cross-border raids in any future conflict, with the specific goal of attacking and conquering a civilian town near the border.

Israel appears increasingly concerned that Iran is attempting to transfer some of its military influence from Syria, where Russian Federation is the government's top ally, to Lebanon.

Advancing into Israel, Hezbollah's arsenal of rockets and mortar shells would provide them with massive cover fire.

The counter-tunnel operation also underlines how Israel's enemies work together.

Neither side appears interested quite yet in another full-fledged confrontation like the 2006 war, but any skirmish could spark an all-out conflict along the tense border.
