Trump insists any cooperation with Mueller is based on 'lies'

  • US political consultant Roger Stone speaks to reporters at the US Capitol in Washington US

President Donald Trump praised a key witness in the Russian Federation investigation Monday for having the "guts" not to testify against him, and said his former lawyer - who cut a deal with prosecutors - should head straight to prison.

'You mean he can do all of the bad, unrelated to Trump, things having to do with fraud, big loans, Taxis, etc., and not serve a long prison term?' The president asked.

Cohen and prosecutors referred to Trump as "individual one" throughout proceedings and said he lied "to be loyal to Individual One".

Cohen, who is cooperating with a federal investigation into whether Trump's campaign worked with Russian Federation to sway the election, is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec 12 after pleading guilty to tax evasion, making false statements to a bank, campaign finance violations, and lying to Congress.

Trump tweeted that Stone's comments showed "he will not be forced by a rogue and out of control prosecutor to make up lies and stories about 'President Trump'".

Federal law makes it a crime to knowingly intimidate, threaten, or persuade another person to withhold testimony in an investigation.

Naval standoff: Vladimir Putin blames Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko
Tensions have loomed between Ukraine and Russian Federation after the crisis over the weekend in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov. He said Trump is "not going away". "I was thinking about it, but they'd like to have it", Trump said.

Think your friends would be interested? Meanwhile, George Conway, White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway's husband, suggested this tweet is example of witness tampering.

Cohen said that he had lied to Congress to minimize the links between Trump, who was seeking the Republican presidential nomination, and the Moscow project that Trump's company was pursuing at the time.

"Witness tampering", was all Trump biographer Tim O'Brien tweeted after retweeting the president's post. Asked if he expected a pardon from Trump - who has not taken a pardon for convicted former campaign manager Paul Manafort off the table - Stone replied: 'I've had no discussion regarding a pardon'.

"Robert Mueller... and his out of control band of Angry Democrats, don't want the truth, they only want lies".

Solomon said his interviews with more than 50 witnesses in the Trump case and reviews of hundreds of pages of court filings confirm, among other things, that almost all of the contacts "involved the same overture - a discussion about possible political dirt or stolen emails harmful to Hillary Clinton, or unsolicited business in London or Moscow".

Neil Katyal, who served as acting U.S. solicitor general during the Obama presidency, responded: "George is right".
