Police, who combed the property Friday seeking forensic evidence, said two men were being questioned in connection with the incident, but had not been arrested.

Pretoria police have confirmed they've taken two men in for questioning regarding an attempted robbery in which former Springbok player Naka Drotske was shot and wounded.

Naka Drotske, wearing the scrum cap (centre), and Os du Randt, far right, playing for South Africa in 1999.

Drotské was shot three times - in the right side of the chest, stomach and right arm.

"There was a struggle whereby one of the men was shot at", he said. Du Randt was not injured.

Drotske's wife, Marzanne, told TimesLive that a pair of strangers helped them get to hospital to save her husband's life.

"He's stable. He's lost a lot of blood but he's stable now", Cameron said.

Drotské remains in a critical condition after the attack that took place on Thursday evening, 29 November.

Drotské played 26 tests for the Springboks and was a member of the Rugby World Cup winning team in 1995.

He was reserve hooker when South Africa hosted and won the World Cup in 1995, making just the one appearance, one year after the end of apartheid.

Drotske underwent surgery immediately upon arrival at a hospital and is said to be in a stable condition.

"Our thoughts are with former London Irish player Naka Drotske after this shocking news, we wish him a speedy recovery", tweeted the club with a shamrock icon.

Overall, he won 26 caps for South Africa during a six-year global career between 1993 and 1999.

Drotske's brother Tinus says the family will be moving from the area.
