Trump's trade war on China is already well underway, and he is threatening to impose deeper tariffs in January unless Chinese leader Xi Jinping yields when they meet on the G20 sidelines.

Although Trump said this month that the G20 represented the ideal opportunity to "make a deal with China", should a deal not be reached, the situation could escalate quickly, devastating stock-market returns for the next year.

"If they did make the smartphones in the United States, it would add somewhere between 20% to 35% more to the final consumer prices of the phones sold to the public", Creative Solutions president Tim Bajarin said.

In recent months the United States and China have been engaged in rather heated negotiations regarding global trade deals, and the USA has leveraged tariffs in an attempt to gain the upper hand.

The US, Canada and Mexico are scheduled to sign the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that is replacing the Nafta trade deal during a ceremony on Friday. Trump has also repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs on all remaining imports from China.

There is a "good possibility" President Donald Trump will reach an agreement later this week to resolve the trade dispute with China, a White House official said Tuesday.

Trump said that if he does not come to an agreement with Xi to open the Chinese market to USA exports, he will continue exerting trade pressure on the world's second largest economy by including goods heretofore not subsumed under the increased tariff structure.

Angered by rampant inflation and soaring unemployment, an alliance of Argentine activist groups and trade unions plans a major protest in central Buenos Aires on Friday, the summit's first day.

Trump, standing in between his Canadian and Mexican counterparts, said the new deal was a model agreement that would stop auto jobs from going overseas, protect intellectual property rights and provide robust protections for digital trade and financial services.

If the conflict between China and the United States continues to escalate, non-tariff barriers particularly in the technology sector are likely to become increasingly popular.

Trump is considering widening the tariffs on Chinese-made imports to the U.S., which could mean new duties on Apple products of between 10 and 25 percent.

"U.S. and European officials will continue criticizing Russian Federation [while] Trump will probably continue to waffle on the issue", he said.

US President Donald Trump will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, and then the two leaders will meet jointly with Prime Minister Modi.

The government says the close relationship between Australia and the US, along with the fact that Mr Morrison spoke to US Vice-President Mike Pence this month, means there is no pressing need for a formal bilateral with Mr Trump. Trump on Thursday abruptly cancelled their planned bilateral talks, citing Russia's seizure of Ukrainian vessels.

But foreign firms in China complain that such promises are all too routine, and analysts doubt that Trump and Xi's talks over a working dinner will serve up much beyond a commitment to negotiate further.

"China and Argentina are honest friends that trust each other and good partners that benefit each other", said Xi, adding that he is delighted to visit Argentina and meet his Argentine friends again.

"I know the president's schedule is pretty packed, and has a number of sessions that he'll be involved in", said Sanders.
