Her victory means Republicans will hold a 53-47 majority in the new U.S. Senate that convenes in January. He tried to recreate the coalition that propelled Democrat Doug Jones to a Senate win in neighbouring Alabama a year ago by energizing black voters, particularly women, and winning support from white swing voters.

In the final stretch, she portrayed the contest as a battle of ideologies and was aided by President Donald Trump, who visited the state on Monday for two rallies, as well as GOP groups who poured resources in the final stretch to bolster her campaign.

It began when video emerged online of her telling supporters earlier this month that she'd be "on the front row" if one of her supporters "invited me to a public hanging".

She initially refused to apologize for the hanging remark, but said in a debate last week that she was sorry "for anyone that was offended".

Several businesses, including giant retailer Walmart, had demanded Hyde-Smith return their donations after her public hanging comment.

Congratulations to Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith on your big WIN in the Great State of Mississippi.

The runoff election in MS between the two highest vote-getters in the November 6 midterm elections gained a high-degree of national attention because of the many controversial statements and actions made by Hyde-Smith in the weeks leading up to the election.

Priyanka's head over heels in love with Nick and she really feels like her palace wedding will be a magical fairytale wedding. One day earlier, Jonas teased that he was getting ready to travel somewhere, tweeting, "See you later NYC".

Additionally, when Hyde-Smith was in school she attended a whites-only segregated academy, set up by parents to avoid racially integrated schools. "She wasn't trying to send any messages". The senator's campaign responded to the report by attacking the "liberal media". Those turned out to be a form of protest against Hyde-Smith, thought that wasn't clear when the story was first reported.

So Republicans will maintain a 53/47 margin in the U.S. Senate, at least until 2020 (when Hyde-Smith among others will again face voters in the very different, high-turnout context of a presidential cycle). Doug Jones successfully employed last year in Alabama to become the first Democrat elected to the Senate from that state in 25 years.

Espy, 64, campaigned as a moderate who would work with Trump and Republicans to benefit the state.

"We've worked hard to overcome the stereotypes that hurt our economy and cost us jobs". In and itself that is not necessarily problematic, but the caption Hyde-Smith posted below the photo, presumably written by her, clearly said that Confederate artifacts and weapons represent "Mississippi history at its best!"

Hyde-Smith was in her second term as MS agriculture commissioner when Republican Gov. Phil Bryant appointed her to temporarily succeed GOP Sen.

While Hyde-Smith largely stayed off the campaign trail, the party's infrastructure rallied to her defense. Democrats lost a net of two Senate seats in the 2018 elections, winning seats in Nevada and Arizona but losing Missouri, North Dakota, Indiana and Florida.
