Oprah Winfrey's mother, Vernita Lee, has died

Vernita Lee passed away on Thanksgiving at her Milwaukee home, People reported. The longtime housekeeper died in her home in Wisconsin on Thursday, November 22.

No other details were given. She is survived by daughters Winfrey and Patricia Amanda Faye Lee, who Lee gave up for adoption at birth and later reconnected with. She described having to sleep on her mother's porch when she first arrived in Milwaukee because her mother's roommate took issue with Winfrey's skin complexion.

Oprah had Vernita on her talk show in 1990.

Meanwhile, Lee's son Jeffrey Lee passed away in 1989, while her third daughter, Patricia Lee Lloyd, died in 2003. The family directed memorials to Feeding America in Lee's name.

Friends, family and local relatives are mourning the passing of Vernita Lee, the mother of Oprah Winfrey.

The future billionaire lived with her grandmother until she was six before moving to Milwaukee to join her mother who was working as a maid. I don't know anybody.

Oprah had two half-siblings on her mother's side.

Previously, the media mogul said she learned a surprising piece of information about herself online, that she was the very first African-American billionaire, and the first African-American woman as well.

"I walked into that space feeling completely alone and abandoned".

The talk show host posted two videos on her Instagram page from Thanksgiving. "I don't really even know my mother", Winfrey told HuffPost in a 2015 interview. "To my mother, I say, 'You can let this shame go'".
