Two nooses and several hate signs were found hanging at the Mississippi State Capitol Monday around 7:15 a.m.

"We are hanging nooses to remind people that times have not changed", reads one of the signs, according to the Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration, which oversees the Capitol Police.

The Senate runoff on Tuesday is between Republican senator Cindy Hyde-Smith and Democrat Mike Espy, in a race that has increasingly taken on racial overtones.

Hyde-Smith has come under fire for her comment about attending a "public hanging" and voter suppression, which her campaign later said was a joke. She later apologized "to anyone that was offended". "If he invited me to a public hanging, I would be on the front row".

At a midday event, before the content of the signs was disclosed, Espy said he knew nothing about the nooses or signs.

Confusion over US-Mexico "refugee deal"
He also admonished the US central bank over the cost of borrowing money. Others, he said, would "stay in Mexico", he added, without elaboration.

If elected, Espy would be the first black person elected to the Senate from the state since the era of Reconstruction.

McIntosh added that Capitol police didn't have any suspects as of late Monday morning.

Trump is holding two rallies Monday to help Hyde-Smith finish the final two years of the term started by Republican Thad Cochran.

"I always considered that a great compliment", he said. If we find evidence beyond a reasonable doubt that a federal crime has occurred, these criminals will be swiftly prosecuted and held accountable. The four photos, which were posted to her Facebook account, were of Hyde-Smith appears in posing with different Confederate artifacts like rifles, soldiers' hats and documents with the caption "Mississippi history at its best!"

Representatives for Google did not say when the company made its donation to Hyde-Smith's campaign or when a refund was requested. It says MS had 581 lynching during that time, the highest number of any state.
