GM will close 5 North America plants, another three elsewhere. OH taxpayers rescued GM, and it's shameful that the company is now abandoning the Mahoning Valley and laying off workers right before the holidays.
General Motors' decision to halt production in two states that were key to Donald Trump's 2016 victory could complicate the president's re-election bid. The Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly produces the Buick LaCrosse, Cadillac CT6, Chevrolet Impala, and Chevrolet Volt.
"Everybody's very downhearted", he said.
Most of the factories to be affected by GM's restructuring build cars that will not be sold in the U.S. after next year.
General Motors Canada will announce on Monday that it's closing its plant in Oshawa, Ont., in a move that will affect thousands of jobs in the city east of Toronto, The Canadian Press has learned.
US Senator Rob Portman, a Republican from OH, said he's "deeply frustrated" with GM's decision to shut down a plant in Lordstown and is pressing Barra to come up with an alternative product for the factory.
It's part of an announcement that GM is laying off almost 15,000 factory and white-collar workers in North America, including those at its Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly plant in MI and Ashawa Assembly in Ontario, Canada. The company, calling the move a response to "changing market conditions", said it would get rid of more than 6,000 production jobs and another 8,000 salaried positions.
General Motors blamed the decision on declining sales of small and mid-sized cars and said it would focus on making more large sport-utility vehicles. General Motors, in July, said Trump's tariffs would cost it more than $1 billion over a full year and the company's chief financial officer told Reuters that GM would deal with those added costs by "negotiating price reductions with suppliers, raising prices on more popular models, and cost cutting".
Manafort Lied and Should Get No Break on Term, Mueller Says
They said Mr Manafort disagreed with the characterisation that he had breached the agreement. "He has accepted responsibility". The torpedoing of Manafort's plea deal could expose him to a lengthier prison sentence and potentially more criminal charges.
Plants in Baltimore, Maryland, and Warren, Michigan that assemble powertrain components will have no products assigned to them after 2019 and thus are at risk of closure, the company said.
"I implore President Trump to keep his word when he came to the Mahoning Valley past year and promised jobs were 'all coming back". It was about 50% cars just five years ago.
"I once again urged GM to make a commitment to bring a new product to the plant, especially since GM is proposing to build a number of new electric vehicles", Mr. Portman said. In the short term, I urged GM to at least reallocate some of the production and employees to the Toledo GM plant.
About 6,000 factory workers could lose jobs in the USA and Canada, although some could transfer to truck and SUV plants.
But moving that auto, the Chevrolet Cruze, south of the border brings the risk of provoking a backlash from President Donald Trump.
Trump has not yet responded to the announcement, but he encouraged a boycott of Harley-Davidson after the motorcycle company said it was moving some production overseas because of the tariffs. USA sales of the Impala were down 13 percent through September. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles got out of small and midsize cars two years ago, while Ford announced plans to shed all cars but the Mustang sports auto in the United States in the coming years.
Bobbi Marsh, who has worked assembling the Chevrolet Cruze compact auto at the OH plant since 2008, said she can't understand why the factory might close given the strong economy.
