  • Donald Trump Threatens to Close US Border With Mexico

For the past several weeks, President Donald Trump has warned the migrant caravan members, again reiterating his stance on Nov 26.

- US border agents fired tear gas on hundreds of migrants protesting near the border with Mexico on Sunday after some of them attempted to get through the fencing and wire separating the two countries, and American authorities shut down the nation's busiest border crossing from the city where thousands are waiting to apply for asylum.

At least 500 migrants, including women and children, had been taking part in a peaceful demonstration in Tijuana before dashing towards the border in an attempt to clamber over a first metal fence.

Trump administration officials have characterized the vast majority of asylum claims as fraudulent or legally insufficient, and have taken steps to reduce the backlog of asylum claims that they say are often used by migrants to gain entry into the US and disappear into the country as their claims are adjudicated.

"But it's a term that's used because many people, it's a very violent frightful thing, but they feel they have an advantage when they're with a young child".

On Monday, he tweeted: "Mexico should move the flag-waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries".

The clash between the migrant caravan and USA authorities along the Mexican border in recent days highlights a contentious topic in the immigration debate: asylum laws. United States border police then fired rubber bullets and tear gas into the crowd of men, women and children. "Congress, fund the WALL!". While cross-border shootings are not common, they do occur.

"We would close it and we'll keep it closed if we're going to have a problem. But we can not take the whole responsibility of dealing with this situation", he said. "This is the responsibility of Mexico's government".

Mexico has been in negotiations with the United States over a possible scheme to keep migrants in Mexico while their asylum claims are processed.

Otherwise, Gastelum said the Mexican government has pledged to increase federal law enforcement presence in Tijuana and do everything possible to ensure safety in the city.

US government agencies defended the response to Sunday's incident at the San Ysidro crossing south of San Diego, California.

A migrant mother photographed running with her daughters from tear gas at the U.S. -Mexico border said she never expected the U.S. Border Patrol to fire gas canisters at children and families.

The agency said that officers chose to use the tear gas "because of the risk to agents' safety".

Some rights advocates and legal experts were concerned that the Trump administration was seeking to exploit the melee.

McAleenan said individuals breached the border fence to the east of San Ysidro and some went west and sought to enter through the Tijuana River channel.

Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott told CNN "numerous" people had made it across the border on Sunday, adding that most of those who were detained were men.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement that USA authorities will continue to have a "robust" presence along the Southwest border and that they will prosecute anyone who damages federal property or violates US sovereignty. "They grab a child because they think they're going to have a certain status by having a child", he said. There are more than 7,000 at the US border in Tijuana and the city of Mexicali, with more than 800 others still moving toward the border. Mexican Interior Minister Alfonso Navarrete accused some of the migrants of attempting to cross from Tijuana in a "violent way", and said they would be deported. "Here's the bottom line: Nobody is coming into our country unless they come in legally".

The American Civil Liberties Union released a statement criticizing the decision to use tear gas.

US military officials have said they expected troops to be repositioned as the situation developed and changed. He says some threw rocks and bottles at US agents, but there was no report of violence Monday.
