First responders were reportedly among the victims.

"I kept swimming until another boat surfaced, and retrieved us from the waters to the main land", he said.

The survivors who were able to be rescued on Saturday night were shortly whisked away in a bus as the rescue mission continued.

The boat's passengers, in a party mood halfway through their journey, likely panicked when the vessel started to sink, he said.

Police spokesman Mr Emilian Kayima could not divulge more details on the accident by press time.
