  • 98 million Indians will suffer from diabetes by 2030, says Study

According to a new study, these changes will cause a dramatic increase in the number of people living with diabetes. The study says that if access does not improve in the coming years, only 30 million will receive insulin to control their type 2 diabetes.

The rate at which people are developing diabetes has experts anxious that we will not be able to keep up with the demand for insulin.

Insulin is needed to treat all people with type 1 diabetes and some people with type 2 diabetes.

The findings suggested that the need of insulin will be highest in 2030 and will remain inaccessible to around 4 crore adults with type 2 diabetes if the access remains at current levels.

"These estimates suggest that current levels of insulin access are highly inadequate compared to projected need, especially in Africa and Asia", explained Dr. Sanjay Basu, an assistant professor of medicine at Stanford University.

Projection Stanford University researchers developed a microsimulation of type 2 diabetes management from 2018-2030 across 221 countries using data from the International Diabetes Federation.

Jennie-O Turkey products recalled due to possible salmonella contamination
It's the first brand to be named in the yearlong outbreak investigation that has sickened more than 160 people in 35 states . These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase, according to the USDA news release .

The situation is being made worse due to the fact there are only three major manufacturers of insulin: Novo Nordisk, Sanofi and Lilly.

The Guardian quoted Dr Sanjay Basu from Stanford University in the U.S., who led the research, as saying the current levels of insulin access are inadequate specially in Africa and Asia, requiring more efforts to overcome this shortage.

Insulin is very much essential for patients to combat type 2 diabetes and it will help the diabetic victims to reduce complications associated with this disease like kidney failure, blindness and stroke.

While almost 80 million people could be in need of insulin, only 38 million are likely to have access to it, based on current numbers. They estimated the potential number of insulin users, amount of insulin required, and the burden of diabetes complications under varying levels of insulin access and treatment targets (from 6.5% to 8% HbA1c, a measure of blood glucose), in adults aged 18 or older.

A study published in the journal Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, says access to insulin will fall well short of demand. "Except if governments start activities to make insulin accessible and affordable, at that point its utilization is continually going to be a long way from optimal".
