One of dozens of world leaders attending World War I commemorations in France this weekend, Trump tweeted after landing in Paris that Macron's call for a "real European army" was "insulting".

"Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism", Macron said, speaking in French.

Trump was accompanied by the first lady, Melania Trump, at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the base of the Arc de Triomphe.

"We agreed not to violate the host's work schedule, we will not organize any meetings here at their request", he said.

The UK government has invited 10,000 members of the public to march past the Cenotaph in a "People's Procession" to give thanks and pay their respects to all who served in World War I. It has also called for bells to be rung across the nation and around the world to replicate the spontaneous ringing of bells across Britain on November 11, 1918 as news of the war's end spread.
