What's Going On With That Bizarre Rectangular Iceberg?

But alien conspiracy fans will be disappointed to learn that it's a naturally occurring phenomenon.

The image was taken by NASA's Operation IceBridge, a fleet of research aircraft that image Earth's polar ice. "It probably wouldn't flip over", she said, but it could still crack and break up. The nearly ideal 90-degree angles of this slab of ice may puzzle many people, making them think that this geometrical shape was deliberately carved with a enormous chainsaw.

As the picture shows, tabular icebergs are large slabs of ice with almost vertical sides and flat tops.

This is near the Larsen C ice shelf, where NASA believes the iceberg has recently broken off from - evidence of a recent break comes from the fact the iceberg has sharp edges.

Take a look at photos of the sharp-angled iceberg below.

The icebergs are a particular kind called tabular icebergs, which resemble sheet cakes.

The incredibly clean edges indicate how new this iceberg is, as the wind and the sea have yet to erode its flanks. And the portion above the surface is likely just 10 percent of the total iceberg, Petty says.

Pakistan beat Australia to claim biggest ever Test win and clinch series
Yasir didn't get the wickets, but he bowled just as well. "That is what Pakistan did really well together". The teams next meet in a three-match Twenty20 worldwide series which begins on October 24.

"A tabular iceberg can be seen on the right, floating among sea ice just off of the Larsen C ice shelf", the U.S. space agency said.

However, there is no giant conspiracy around the perfectly rectangular slab of ice.

In 2008 the British Antarctic Survey flew over a whole collection of these freakishly ideal tabular icebergs, which had broken off of the Wilkins Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula.

The northern Antarctic Peninsula is ice-covered and mountainous.

One of Harbeck's photos includes both a fragment of the rectangular iceberg, as well as A68 in the distance.

Tabular icebergs form when they split off from ice shelves, and sometimes the cracks that divide them from their parent ice form in geometric patterns, including straight lines.

A crack in the Larsen C ice shelf grew 17 kilometres in December.
