U.S. President Donald Trump, the kingdom's staunchest Western ally, was quoted by the Wall Street Journal as saying Prince Mohammed bore ultimate responsibility for the operation that led to Khashoggi's death.

Thursday's announcement comes days after CIA Director Gina Haspel traveled to Turkey and listened to audio purportedly capturing the journalist's murder, giving a key member of Trump's Cabinet access to the central piece of evidence Turkey has used to assert that the killing was planned.

"It is tragic that it took his death to get the Saudi authorities to grant them the freedom to travel", Slim told AFP.

"Even if US President Trump saves [Mohammed bin] Salman, in the eyes of the world, he is a questionable person with Khashoggi's blood on his hands", Cevik wrote.

Initially Saudi officials claimed Khashoggi had left the diplomatic mission unharmed; however, under Turkish pressure joined by the questions from the global community, it was forced to confess that he had been killed in a premeditated murder.

Khashoggi, a known critic of the Saudi crown prince, was a known critic of the crown prince, disappeared after entering the Saudi consulate earlier this month. "Where is it?" Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said at a news conference with his Palestinian counterpart.

Saudi Arabia has detained 18 people and dismissed five senior government officials as part of the investigation into Khashoggi's murder.

US President Donald Trump calls Khashoggi killing a 'total fiasco'
Trump said: "Once they thought about it, everything else they did was bad too". "Somebody really messed up", he said. He said: "I think I'll know everything in a short period of time ".

"From this place where Jamal lost his life, we clearly state that we will not accept compromises in the case of his murder", said a statement from the group, read by Ayman Nour, the Egyptian chief of opposition broadcaster El-Sharq.

The young crown prince has denied having knowledge of the alleged assassination mission and on Wednesday promised to bring those responsible to justice.

A photograph of the meeting showed Salah staring coldly at the prince as the pair shook hands.

The arrests were accompanied by an announcement that King Salman was placing his son, Mohammed, in charge of restructuring the Saudi intelligence apparatus - a move that all but ended speculation that the crown prince would be sanctioned. Several carried cardboard images of his face and signs reading "Khashoggi's friends".

The king assured Putin that the Saudi government was determined to hold the guilty parties accountable and to make sure "they receive their punishment".

Saudi Arabia is the lynchpin of a US -backed regional bloc against Iran but the crisis has strained Riyadh's relations with the West. Dozens of Western officials, bankers and executives shunned a big investment conference in Riyadh this week.
