Richard Branson Is Just 'Weeks' Away From Sending Virgin Galactic Into Space

  • Virgin Galactic will be in space in “weeks not months,” says Branson

"Integrating mindfulness into our everyday lives is just as important as eating well and exercising regularly, and I am so excited to see Virgin Australia deeply embedding mindfulness into the workplace and onboard flights", Branson said.

And Allen licensed the spaceplane tech to Branson for Virgin Galactic.

Speaking to CNBC, Branson said the company will be in space "within weeks and not months", adding that Virgin Galactic is "more than tantalisingly close" to conducting its first suborbital test flight. And then we will be in space with myself in months and not years.

Mr Branson's Virgin Group is the parent company of Virgin Galactic, which was founded in 2004 to develop commercial spacecraft for space tourism and space exploration. Despite the $US250,000 ($350,834) price tag, however, some 800 people have bought Virgin Galactic tickets since they went on sale almost 15 years ago.

To reach space, the pilots must take the Unity higher still.

The CEO of the popular airline is seeking to make his company the first one to offer consumer flights to space.

Branson also expressed the hope that with time the ticket price will drop to 40-50 thousand dollars. The company plans to provide orbital human spaceflights as well.

The price is a step up from the Galaxy A8, which was around £100 cheaper, but the new features could make this easily justifiable. Capture the world in its fullest and without limit, with the Ultra Wide Lens, and shoot like a pro with the Scene Optimizer .

Branson's comments, it needs to be said, should be taken with a grain of salt. In 2014, an early version of a Virgin Galactic spacecraft pulled apart and crashed during a test flight over the Mojave, killing co-pilot Michael Alsbury.

Once released, the spaceship will fire up its rocket, and head for the sky.

The total trip time would last between 90 minutes and two hours.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has Blue Origin, and he is pumping in US$1 billion of his Amazon stock into the venture every year with the aim of launching a crewed mission next year.

Virgin's space programme is the culmination of a 14-year process.

Musk has reached dizzying heights with his numerous private space deliveries to the International Space Station at an altitude of around 1.4 million feet (408,000 metres), but is yet to fly any of his planned passenger-carrying craft.
