The states of Alaska, South Dakota, Minnesota, Vermont, and OR and cities like Austin, Los Angeles, Cincinnati, and over 50 others have all dropped Columbus Day references and replaced the holiday with Indigenous Peoples' Day.

Indigenous Peoples' Day occurs every year on the second Monday of October, a day traditionally celebrated as Columbus Day, but in recent years have shifted focus to illuminate the experiences of Native Americans and Indigenous People, who were almost exterminated in parts of what was known as "the New World". "No. 1, you can't discover a people that is already here".

South Dakota did it first, in the 1990s. "We can't wait to keep the message of "love and music" alive on stage on October 8".

A celebration of Columbus Day in one southern Colorado community and it was met with backlash. Columbus Day has been officially recognized nationwide since 1937 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt proclaimed it a national holiday.

Columbus, Ohio, is open for business on Columbus Day, as the city is not observing the day that honors its controversial namesake.

Past year around the Columbus Day federal holiday, bright red graffiti across the statue spelled out "Black Lives Matter" and "murderer," calling attention to the atrocities the explorer committed against African slaves.

L.A. Times audience engagement editor Steve Saldivar posted photos on Twitter of the statue before and after an enclosure was constructed around it "on the eve of Indigenous Peoples Day". "We want to honor and remember that and stand against the oppression that has occurred in American history with regards to our native populations", Ksander said.

The first New York City Indigenous Peoples Day celebration was in 2015, when 6,000 indigenous people and their supporters gathered on Randall's Island.

"This is terrific! It's bad enough the city is named after a genocidal racist maniac, but this is a step in the right direction".

"(Columbus sailed) west across the Atlantic and (made) the initial discovery of the Americas, the western hemisphere, its islands and its people", he said.

Indigenous Peoples Day has been observed by inhabitants of San Francisco and beyond, especially on Alcatraz Island.

"Over time we've learned more and more", says Jack Manno, a NOON Committee Member.

"We're proud to say that we're American Italians". "It's just really important to me to show up for this event and show up to support the indigenous peoples community, and also honor and celebrate".

But others disagreed and said the holiday should be changed. "We are tokens in our own homelands", she said.
